Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

This position is a fellowship to learn about and contribute to the domestic and international policy work of the UCC Office of Public Policy and Advocacy in Washington, DC. The position will engage in the coalition work of faith-based advocacy offices, assist with public policy analysis and advocacy, and support the UCC advocacy campaigns and the editorial board for the Justice and Peace Action Network (JPANet), the UCC’s electronic advocacy network. This is a two-year term position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the policy work of the office by tracking federal policy in alignment with UCC General Synod policy.
  • Participate in several Washington Interreligious Staff Community working groups and other meetings on domestic and international policy.
  • Serve as part of the JPANet editorial board and assist in the planning, content, and building of weekly action alerts.
  • Serve as a member of the planning committee of the annual Ecumenical Advocacy Days (EAD).
  • Support seminars and schedule congressional meetings for individuals and groups who visit the Washington Office to learn about the work of faith-based advocacy.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of special projects and initiatives, including the development of advocacy toolkits and resources.
  • Support the campaign work of the office, including Our Faith Our Vote, and their implementation throughout the UCC and among faith partners.
  • Help schedule and at times join or lead congressional meetings.
  • Beyond policy work, the Fellow will have the opportunity to engage in communications, hospitality, and/or administrative work.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable education and experience;
  • Commitment to and ability to carry out the mission of the United Church of Christ through its Washington Office;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects, set priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team;
  • Respect for collaborative decision-making and community planning;
  • Self-motivation, dependability, flexibility, creativity, and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to interact effectively and sensitively with persons from diverse backgrounds;
  • Interest in faith-based social justice advocacy and learning how federal policy shapes those efforts.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information:

  • The position is based in Washington, D.C. and requires at least 3 days in the office.
