GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITIONThe Executive for UCC Disaster Ministries leads efforts to position the United Church of Christ as a denomination fully prepared for and able to respond to natural and human caused disasters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conceptualize and develop plans for relating UCC Disaster Ministries to the bold, inspirational, goals and strategies of the United Church of Christ.

 

  • Nurture, guide and resource the UCC Conference Disaster Coordinators Network and the UCC Chaplains for Disaster.

 

  • Coordinate with UCC Conferences in all areas of disaster preparedness, response and mitigation including the development of individualized conference disaster preparedness and response plans.  

 

  • Position the UCC, especially at the conference level, to engage in times of natural and human caused disaster.

 

  • Facilitate and manage opportunities for volunteer mission trip groups to engage in disaster recovery efforts in the United States

 

  • Seek out and nurture relationships with ecumenical and civic disaster response partners.

 

  • Review and respond to ACT Alliance and Church World Service disaster appeals;  requests from UCC Conferences and local partners; and Global Ministries Area Offices on behalf of bi-lateral partner requests.

 

  • Coordinate and monitor the UCC Disaster Ministries budget

 

  • Administer special disaster funds per WCM policy

 

  • Interpret the UCC Disaster Ministries to the UCC constituency and ecumenical partners through frequent use of electronic platforms and interactive social media; speaking engagements and preaching.

 

  • Engage with the Church World Service Development and Humanitarian Assistance Committee and Disaster Roundtables and the ACT Alliance.

 

  • Serve as UCC liaison with relevant disaster agencies such as the National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD).
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The qualifications listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform successfully in this position:

 

  • A commitment to and theological understanding of global mission in its broad range of concerns; a person of faith with grounding in the United Church of Christ and its core values

 

  • A college degree in a related field, or the equivalent amount of demonstrated work experience.

 

  • Prior disaster field work in the USA and/or internationally and an understanding of and commitment to work with disaster response entities such as Church World Service (CWS); ACT Alliance; NVOAD, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), etc.

 

  • Demonstrated success in program development and administration; experience in budget control and supervision of staff.

 

  • Desire and sensitivity to working in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as in one's understanding of mission.

 

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently and confidentially.

 

  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills.

 

  • Demonstrated interactive social media, electronic engagement and  public speaking skills.

 

  • Ability to travel in the USA and internationally. Travel estimated at 40% - 50% of time, primarily in USA.

 

  • Computer literacy skills.
