Job Summary The Speech-Language Pathologist works as part of the Communication and Writing Aids (CWAS) program. CWAS is an interdisciplinary team comprised of speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, communicative disorders assistants and assistive technology consultants, working collaboratively with clients, their families and community partners to provide augmentative and alternative communication assessment/intervention. Services are provided at Holland Bloorview, in client homes and in the community. CWAS is an Expanded-Level Clinic (designated by the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) to provide specialized assessment and training for children and youth with complex communication and/or writing needs. Key Responsibilities Provides consultation, evaluation, assessment, intervention and counselling to clients and families, and community partners about augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) Works collaboratively to ensure the client and/or family is central to all planning, assessment and intervention Uses appropriate standardized tests and outcome measures in clinical practice Uses non-standard assessment tools/forms, models and frameworks, when appropriate Makes appropriate referrals to other services, agencies, etc. Incorporates goal setting in discussion with family/client Adapts approach to changing needs of clients and families Integrates partner communication strategies for use with families and clients with complex communication and access needs Demonstrate familiarity with current augmentative communication technologies and software systems Keeps family/client informed of progress and of any changes in plan Adheres to Centre/professional charting guidelines As an Assistive Devices Program (ADP) Authorizer, the clinician ensures compliance and familiarity with ADP program and administration policies, eligibility, and responsibilities as outlined by the Ministry of Health's ADP Authorizer Roles & Responsibilities Administrative Manual and related Communication Aids Policy and Administration Manuals. Demonstrates familiarity with current literature, issues and trends of practice Utilize the teaching/learning process to provide new knowledge, education and best practices, both formal and informal, to clients/families, colleagues, students, and other professionals within the organization and the community Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices Supports the supervision of student clinicians Work collaboratively with Communicative Disorder Assistants (CDAs) supportive personnel as appropriate Other duties as assigned Qualifications Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology Current registration with the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO) Individual Authorizer certified or awaiting IA approval from the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) to prescribe communication aids Minimum of one year work experience as a Speech Language Pathologist Experience in the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication highly preferred Previous pediatric clinical related experience preferred Completion of the Foundations in AAC: An interprofessional course would be an asset. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, members of the interdisciplinary care team and community partners.
