DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Public Health Nurse I: This is the entry level position in public health nursing classification series. This position is responsible for performing the more routine tasks and duties assigned. Assignments are generally limited in scope and are performed within a procedural framework.   GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB: Provide comprehensive professional public health nursing services in a variety of office, clinic, and community settings.   ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (These duties are illustrative of typical essential responsibilities of the job, and may vary according to assignment) Public Health Nurse I: Under close supervision, performs routine public health nursing services for the public in offices, outlying clinics, and community settings. Participates in Garfield County Public Health activities requiring RN participation and community outreach. Participates in continuing education offerings. Reviews all work products to ensure highest level of quality. Performs emergency response roles, as requested. Education: Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in nursing from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing. Experience: Previous nursing experience or training. Licenses & Certifications: Valid driver’s license. Must have a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Colorado, CPR certification, and current credentials including continuing and pertinent education in the field of public health nursing.   PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: The physical activities and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Bending and Stooping: Be able to bend, stoop, and kneel when assessing patients, providing treatments, or accessing medical supplies. Grasping and Manipulating: Proficient in handling medical equipment, administering medications, and performing procedures that require precision and dexterity. Physical Contact: Be prepared for physical contact when conducting patient assessments, administering injections, or providing hands-on care. Visual Acuity: sufficient for assessing patient conditions, reading medical records, and administering medications accurately. Hearing: Hearing and auditory perception to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members. Sitting: Ability to sit during documentation and planning sessions, often in clinical settings or offices. Fine Motor Skills: Display precise fine motor skills when performing medical procedures, documenting patient information, and using medical equipment.   WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment varies from clinical facilities to community spaces, involving travel and exposure to diverse areas. Hazards such as infectious diseases, chemical exposures, and unpredictable situations may be encountered. In office settings, tasks are typically performed seated. Flexibility and adaptability to changing environments are required.   WORK HOURS: Regular Full-Time position, 40 hours per week. Hours are typically 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. There may be times when an employee may need to work outside the established work week, such as after hours or on the weekend.   REQUIRED TRAVEL: The employee will frequently be required to travel within the County.   TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT: Computer and relevant software applications, spreadsheets, calendars, and word processing. Will also work with calculators, telephone systems, and mobile phones. Will frequently work with medical equipment such as vaccine equipment, physical assessment tools, personal protection equipment, and emergency communication devices. NOTE: This position requires a pre-employment background check which will include a Criminal Background Check, Education Verification, Employment Verification, and Motor Vehicle Record.
