This position is funded through a government program (Canada Summer Jobs), which creates summer job opportunities for youth; therefore, eligible candidates must be:

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment. International students are not eligible participants. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

The Position

The Decision Support and Data Analytics (DS&DA) team is looking for an experienced Junior Data Analyst with proven ability to: transform data into meaningful insights; analyze and explore data to provide rich insight and a desire to leverage the best approach to arrive at the right decision. The successful candidate will create data visualizations, reports and dashboarding solutions to solve key business problems and drive informed decision making. 

With the launch of our new HB2030 strategic plan the IMT DS&DA team plays a critical role in the implementation of the new strategic plan through support of data-driven strategic initiatives and tracking of key performances indicators (KPIs) and other metrics.

Compensation: $21.00 per hour. Employees will receive an additional 4% in lieu of vacation and paid statutory holidays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Requirement Scoping: Collaboration with key stakeholders to understand information requirements and create analytics solutions to meet their needs.
  • Data & Reporting: Extract data, develop and generate standard reports, and respond to ad-hoc requests using Cognos Analytics Business Intelligence (BI), SQL and Excel
  • Reporting & Visualization: Responsible for all aspects of report and dashboard development in Cognos.
  • Data Privacy: Ensure strict adherence to hospital privacy and data security standards.
  • Reporting Maintenance: Supports and enhances the decision support data analytics infrastructure and capabilities.
  • Documentation: Creates and maintains data definitions, reporting user guides and data lineage documentation
  • Collaboration: Works with other analysts to clarify and improve report specifications or to identify alternative programming solutions.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Ensures reliability and validity of data through collaboration with key internal stakeholers within Clinical Applications, HR and Finance, Health Information Management, Quality & Collaborative Practice and Programs & Services.
  • Data Literacy: Educates staff on opportunities to leverage decision support and data analytics tools and reporting to improve financial, strategic, clinical and operational performance.
  • Storytelling with Data: Presents and explains data and insights using various advanced visualizations and PowerPoint slides to drive informed decision making.
  • Cloud Data, Automation & Analytics Platforms: Assists in building and maintaining automated data pipelines, datasets, and workflows that enable scalable, reliable reporting and analytics solutions using cloud-based platforms such as Snowflake and/or Databricks.
  • Emerging Analytics & AI Tools: Explores the responsible use of emerging analytics and generative AI tools (e.g., AI-assisted querying, documentation, or analysis support) to enhance data exploration and analytic workflows, in alignment with hospital policies and governance.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics or a related field (statistics, clinical informatics, health information management, mathematics, or data science), or equivalent education/experience is required
  • Experience using an enterprise Business Intelligence tools like Cognos BI, Power BI, Tableau or other enterprise level BI tool is required
  • Knowledge of SQL and advanced Excel skills is required
  • Exposure to cloud-based data and analytics platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks, or comparable technologies) is encouraged/ recommended
  • Foundational understanding of data pipelines, datasets, and workflows, including concepts related to data ingestion, transformation, and automation is encouraged/ recommended
  • Exposure to Generative AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, or similar) through school or project work, with an awareness of responsible, ethical, and appropriate use of AI in analytics contexts is encouraged/ recommended
