This position is eligible for an additional bilingual pay differential 

NOTE: Schedule changes are dependent on season operations:

  • Summer Schedule: Friday - Monday
  • Winter Schedule - Wednesday - Saturday

 

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:

Greet customers at the Garfield County Landfill in West Rifle area, inspect loads of trash, make determinations as to any unacceptable items, identify items currently being recycled, weigh vehicles in and out, direct loads to appropriate dumping area. Handles currency and makes change.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Scale House Operation:

  • Greets customers at landfill gate and instructs patrons about landfill regulations and procedures. Enforces policies as needed. Communicates to public the need to comply and directs the customer to proper unloading area.
  • Inspects loads for unacceptable and/or hazardous items. Reports any illegal dumping of hazardous materials immediately to Supervisor.
  • Directs customers to remove acid cell vehicle batteries from loads and directs the removal of any other items currently being segregated at the landfill.
  • Assesses load content and enters vehicle information into computer.
  • Weighs vehicles in and out, collects fees.
  • Handles cash transactions, make change, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Records transactions and balances the register, complete daily closeout procedures accurately and prepares and makes the end-of-day deposit.
  • Reports fire or smoke on landfill site immediately to Rifle Fire Department and Supervisor.
  • Answers phone and any landfill questions posed by the public.
  • Assists in the inspection of random loads as necessary.
  • Participates in training sessions as state and Federal regulations change.
  • Observes safety precautions and wears appropriate safety equipment at all times.
  • Uses and maintains County property in a safe and professional manner.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as determined by Garfield County may be substituted for the following requirements.)

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: One year of landfill or office experience.
  • Licenses & Certifications: Valid driver’s license.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Sitting/Standing: The primary task involves either sitting or standing at a desk, computer, or workstation for extended periods, performing administrative tasks, and using computer equipment.
  • Reaching: Able to reach to accept forms of payments and other related items both in high and low areas.
  • Walking/Mobility: Able to walk (or mobility alternative) during load inspections and up and down stairs.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Occasional lifting and carrying of lightweight office supplies, documents, or small packages may be required, typically not exceeding 15 pounds.
  • Bending and Reaching: May involve occasional bending or reaching to access office equipment, files, or supplies within standard office settings.
  • Grasping and Typing: Ability to use a keyboard, mouse, and office equipment, demonstrating fine motor skills for typing, clicking, and manipulating documents.
  • Visual Acuity: Clear vision for inspecting loads for hazardous items and reading printed and on-screen materials, including text, graphics, and data, and for viewing computer monitors for extended periods.
  • Hearing: Adequate hearing to engage in conversations, respond to telephone calls, respond to radio communications, alarms, and interact with colleagues in a typical office environment.
  • Stamina: Maintain the ability to maintain focus, productivity, and attention to detail while working at a desk for standard office hours.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions that may vary from extreme heat to extreme cold, and to construction equipment and debris, fumes, odors, airborne particles, dust, and hazardous materials. The employee is occasionally exposed to the possibility of bodily injury from electrical shock or mechanical hazard.

The employee is required to wear safety equipment to perform some of the essential functions of the job.

The noise level in the indoor work environment is loud. The outdoor environment is typically loud and may occasionally be extremely loud.

 

WORK HOURS:

  • Work hours are typically 7:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • The employee may be required to work weekends and holidays depending on department needs.

REQUIRED TRAVEL:

None.

 

TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT:

Computer and relevant software applications; calculators; telephone system; mobile phone; two-way radio.
