Position Requirements

Ideal candidate possesses a wide variety of technical skills and knowledge; attention to detail and accuracy; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously; experience managing outside contractors and project schedules; ability to communicate ideas orally, in writing, and visually.  Must have a good working knowledge and the ability to troubleshoot basic mechanical and electrical systems. Familiarity with Microsoft Project is a plus.  Familiarity with programming, electronics, and audio/visual components and systems is required. Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 lbs and work from lifts and ladders is required.  Minimum of 3 years of managerial or supervisory experience is required. Experience in maintenance and operation of interactive exhibits or themed entertainment attractions preferred. Occasional travel is required.

 
Description

OBJECTIVE:  Support COSI's mission by overseeing the overall maintenance and operation of all COSI exhibits and exhibit spaces, striving to accomplish 100% operation within a specified budget.  Oversee, manage and represent all team members working in Exhibit Operations. 

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

  1. Support the prototyping, designing, engineering, and fabricating of new mechanical and structural devices for new hands-on exhibits, interactive elements, theatrical environments, demonstrations, and facility improvements maximizing visitor experience and safety. Providing technical input, advice, and problem-solving support during the exhibit development process. Supervise and assist with installation activities as required.
  2. Prepare and manage project work plans, schedules and budgets supporting project goals and timelines. Produce status reports and summaries as required. Work closely with Project Managers, Fabricators and other stakeholders to track milestones and deadlines to ensure project is on schedule.
  3. Review detail design drawings with the design team at various stages of projects.
  4. Assist in the selection of vendors and professional service contractors and manage vendors and contractors to fabricate structural, mechanical electronic, audio-visual, multimedia and graphics components to specifications within the established budget and schedule.
  5. Oversee the technical support of COSI programs and events where exhibits, demonstration props, A/V equipment or other technical tools are used.  Such programs include COSI on Wheels, Electronic Education, Events, Camp-In and various other workshop programs.
  6. Stay abreast of technology advances, research and source new equipment, materials, techniques, and processes.
  7. Maintain documentation for exhibits and projects including managing and updating manuals, parts lists, and maintenance procedures; and cataloging software back-ups. Train technicians and other team members on new equipment and exhibits as appropriate.
  8. Develop and maintain a rigorous plan for the ongoing and preventative maintenance, repair, and redesign of existing exhibition, demonstration areas, and theaters.
  9. Serve as an active member of the Experience Team and of the COSI Team by participating in and/or organizing creative sessions, reviews and prototype tests and evaluations.
  10. Oversee the hiring, training, scheduling, performance evaluation, and professional development of the technicians, theater operators, volunteers, and interns.  As part of the supervisor responsibility of this job, conduct performance evaluations in accordance with COSI procedures.
  11. Support general COSI operations through participation in meetings as appropriate.
  12. Serve as an example to other COSI Team Members and Volunteers in matters of appearance, attitude, and performance in a manner best serving COSI paid and Volunteer Team Members and Guests.
  13. In accordance with COSI's Guest Services Strategy, and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in Guest Services by assuring Guest safety, using courtesy to drive each Guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Exhibits.
