Position Requirements

Ideal candidate possesses an inventive and cooperative spirit, initiative to work alone without direct supervision, and is responsible for timely completion of assigned tasks.  Applicant must be proficient in using a wide variety of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment.  Applicable experience includes a good working knowledge in a variety of technical fields with the willingness and ability to learn other areas.  These include carpentry, woodworking, machining, welding, basic electrical circuits, and computers.  Also must be proficient with Windows, office applications such as e-mail, Microsoft Office and Excel and the internet (searches and on-line ordering).  Must be able to take design concepts and produce CAD models or be willing to learn on the job as needed.  Must be able to create and read fabrication drawings. 


OBJECTIVE:  Support the prototype, design, and production of new mechanical, electrical and structural devices and exhibits for COSI’s permanent and traveling exhibitions and programs.  Work within a team of Designers, Project Managers, Volunteers, and Program staff to construct, test, inspect and finish projects.  Manage tasks to be completed on time and on budget.



  1. Support the experience development process by designing, prototyping, and fabricating new mechanical and structural devices for COSI’s permanent and traveling exhibitions and programs using wood, plastics, foam core, metals and many other materials.
  2. Operate shop tools such as a table saw, miter saw, planer, jointer, router and band saws and various power tools and hand tools required for constructing cabinetry and specialty interfaces for exhibits, in a safe and efficient manner.  Ability to use a lathe, mill, welder, CNC router a plus.
  3. Coordinate daily tasks, production timelines and priorities with Exhibits Engineering and Fabrication Manager. Collaborate closely with Manager or his/her designated alternate frequently during a project, asking questions when appropriate.
  4. Collaborate and work with other exhibit fabricators, project leaders and designers to provide and accept advice and alternate opinions
  5. Inspect all your own work to make sure it is up to COSI quality standards and is in compliance with drawings, sketches, statements of work, and other provided documentation and/or verbal instructions.
  6. Preplan projects to have supplies, materials and tools ready ahead of time.
  7. Organize and help stock parts and maintain equipment as assigned in COSI’s woodshop. Keep shop and personal workspace neat, clean, organized.
  8. Be fluent in basic computer skills such as e-mail, Microsoft Office and Excel and internet (searches and on-line ordering).  Being fluent in CAD (computer aided design) and be able to create part and assembly models and drawings according to recognized business standards is a plus.
  9. Stay abreast of technology advances and research new equipment, components, and materials for the purpose of creating, prototyping, modifying, and updating COSI’s custom interactive kiosks, shows, and programs.  Work to improve skills and techniques.
  10. Create and maintain documentation for all assigned projects including parts lists, vendor information, and maintenance/operation procedures where necessary. Maintain detailed records and write reports as needed.
  11. Serve as an active member of the Experience Team and of the COSI Team by participating in and/or organizing creative sessions, reviews, and prototype tests and by supporting a quality Guest experience in the permanent exhibitions.
  12. Support general COSI operations through participation in meetings as appropriate.
  13. Serve as an example to other COSI Team Members and Volunteers in matters of appearance, attitude, and performance in a manner best serving COSI paid and Volunteer Team Members and Guests.
  14. In accordance with COSI's Guest Services Strategy, and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in Guest Services by assuring Guest safety, using courtesy to drive each Guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Production & Fabrication, and/or the Vice President of Experience.
