Position Requirements

Ideal candidate is a team player with the ability to work in a dynamic, boisterous, ever-changing environment; has a passion for interacting with young children; a creative thinker; and able to research information pertaining to early childhood.  Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with young children, primarily birth to 3rd grade, parents, teachers, and Team Members essential.  A High School Diploma or equivalent required.  Educational background in early childhood development and education, or equivalent experience preferred.  Currently COSI Part-Time Team Member with a positive 90 day evaluation and demonstrated leadership skills with other COSI Team and assisting in developing program activities preferred. 



OBJECTIVE:  Support COSI’s mission of sparking interest, piquing curiosity, and turning very young children and their parents on to the process of learning and discovering more about the world around them.  Interact with Guests as they explore little kidspace® and lead part-time Team Members and Volunteers in assisting in the facilitation, maintenance, and daily operations of area programs and facilities. 


  • ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

    1. Participate in work related to COSI’s strategic area of focus of Early Childhood Education as needed to ensure the success of this initiative for COSI.
    2. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of area including:
    • little kidspace® philosophy, policies, and operation.
    • Function and operation of all exhibits and program elements.
    • Setup, cleanup, maintenance, and emergency procedures.
    1. Interact with Guests, both children and adults, to enhance their interactions with exhibits during operational hours and to handle any challenging situations which uphold COSI’s policies and procedures.  Provide Guests with a sense of community and caring when they enter the space. 
    2. Facilitate programming held within little kidspace® including workshops, bucket curriculum, studio activities, Big KidLab  and birthday parties as well as any special activities throughout COSI as designated by the Early Childhood Administrative Team.
    3. Train and supervise Part-Time Team Members and Volunteers on COSI policies, little kidspace® policies, hold Team accountable for follow through, and ongoing training and development. 
    4. Assist in training Team Members on presentation skills, job advancement skills, Early Childhood Education, and Guest Service skills; and document challenges and successes of other Team Members through ongoing evaluations of Volunteers, Part-Time Team Members and Apprentices
    5. Assist Early Childhood Administrative Team with Team schedules, daily program operational plan, animal care, and other administrative duties as assigned.
    6. Serve as the little kidspace® point person approximately one weekend every six weeks or as needed, in addition to some evening and holiday shifts.
    7. Primary responsibility for animal care for little kidspace® animals, including maintenance, team communication, and ongoing supervision.
    8. Perform necessary maintenance, set-up, and teardown of program materials and exhibition spaces, for daily operations and special events, including keeping an inventory of floor needs.
    9. Generate ideas for and assist with special area demonstrations and programs when requested.
    10. Perform duties, as required, for special events.
    11. Attend COSI U trainings for professional growth and development.
    12. Support general COSI operations through participation in meetings as appropriate.
    13. Serve as an example to other COSI Team Members and Volunteers in matters of appearance, attitude, and performance in a manner best serving COSI paid and Volunteer Team Members and Guests.
    14. In accordance with COSI's Guest Services Strategy, and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in Guest Services by assuring Guest safety, using courtesy to drive each Guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.
    15. Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager of Early Childhood Operations.
