Director of Branch Operations

Oversee assigned areas of a YMCA branch, with a strong focus on health, well-being and fitness, also providing leadership to membership, aquatics, sports, youth & teen programs, maintenance/housekeeping and business operations. Participate in volunteer and staff development, financial development, community relations and collaborations with community agencies. Position reports to the Executive Director.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in staff development, budget accountability, program development, community involvement, member-centered customer service, fundraising and retention as well as being a people oriented individual with a focus on constantly improving the member experience and building connections within and outside of the branch. Preferred candidate should have experience working in diverse populations and with health & fitness operations, including group exercise. Candidate must possess the ability to multi-task in an extremely fast paced, ever changing, demanding environment.   • Establish, with the branch leadership team, long range plans for programs and services, in harmony with overall YMCA objectives.

  • Provide staff support for assigned committees. Provide staff leadership for annual support campaign.

  • Represent and promote the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses and governmental entities. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community agencies in service delivery area.

  • Recruit, hire, train, develop and direct employees and volunteers. Review and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.

  • Develop, manage and monitor assigned operating budgets to meet or exceed targets. Recommend adjustments to the budget to assure a balanced operation and submit reports on current operations.

  • Develop and direct high quality member engagement strategies and programs which support branch and Association mission, goals and strategies.

  • Engage in active listening with members in order to build relationships, understand individual's goals and interests and take the initiative to assist in the achievement of those goals.

  • Ensure the cleanliness, safety and operational condition of facilities, equipment and grounds of the branch to assure high standards.

  • Serve as a member of YMCA management and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA.

  • Ensure growth in membership, health & fitness, aquatics, sports, youth & teen programs.

  • Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA mission and goals.
Position Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree in exercise science, human services, recreation, business or related field, plus three years related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Three or more years of management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other not-for-profit healthy living agency.
  • Ability to direct assigned operations including volunteer development, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations and program development/management.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with leading health, well-being and fitness operations, including group exercise and personal training.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  • YMCA Team Leader or Multi-Team/Branch Leader certification preferred.
  • CPR, First Aid & other program specific certifications required upon or after hire.
