GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs repairs and maintenance work necessary to maintain County Road and Bridge Department vehicles and equipment in good condition and respond to calls during off hours as required. These positions will also troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical problems as needed. The Mechanic levels are distinguished from one another by the independence of work, level of skills, education, and training required in each position. The position levels represent an internal career ladder and professional growth opportunity, and may be filled at either the level I, II, or III based upon the expertise of the applicant.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Equipment Mechanic I: Works under close supervision and performs basic and routine mechanical work while gaining mastery. The Mechanic I is an entry-level position, designed to provide on-the-job training.
  • Equipment Mechanic II: Works independently under minimal supervision and performs more technical maintenance and diagnostic services. The Mechanic II is a journey-level position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Equipment Maintenance & Diagnostics:

  • Responsible for routine maintenance such as safety inspections, changing oil and filters, and replacing brakes. Performs DOT inspections on equipment and vehicles.
  • Responsible for a wide variety of routine and complex heavy vehicle repair and maintenance according to level and ability. Repair and maintenance may include gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic and brake systems, and other major equipment components, as necessary.
  • Complete a variety of highly skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance on heavy vehicles and equipment including excavators, dump trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, and loaders.
  • According to level and ability, responsible for fabricating, welding, and modifying parts and equipment. Level III performs welding duties as a welder, operating welding equipment, cutting torch, grinder, drill press and related hand tools to fabricate equipment parts or repair parts as needed.
  • Drives all job-related vehicles and heavy equipment.

Division/Department Support:

  • May transport operators and parts in the field.
  • Maintains and submits equipment repair and maintenance records.
  • Orders parts and supplies for equipment in accordance with County purchasing and receiving procedures. May assist in annual inventory of supplies and tools.
  • May train new staff as required based on experience level.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities as determined by Garfield County may be substituted for the following requirements.)

  • Education & Experience:
    • Mechanic I: High school diploma or equivalent, and trade-school level training in Heavy Equipment and Diesel Maintenance are preferred.
    • Mechanic II: In addition to level one requirements must have a minimum of two years of applicable experience.
  • Licenses & Certifications: Licenses must be kept current as a condition of employment.
    • Mechanic I & II: Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) A or B with appropriate endorsement within six (6) months of hire. Licenses must be kept current as a condition of employment.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Lifting and Carrying: Must possess the ability to lift and carry heavy machinery components, tools, and equipment, often exceeding 50 pounds, using proper lifting techniques and equipment.
  • Bending and Stooping: Capable of bending, stooping, and kneeling to access, repair, or maintain various heavy equipment components and systems.
  • Grasping and Manipulating: Proficient in handling a wide range of tools, precision instruments, and machinery parts, demonstrating dexterity and precision in diagnostics and repairs.
  • Visual Acuity: Must possess clear vision to inspect equipment, identify mechanical issues, read technical manuals, and perform intricate tasks on heavy machinery.
  • Walking and Standing: Able to stand for extended periods and move around heavy machinery, workshops, and worksites, which may include uneven terrain.
  • Climbing: Capable of safely ascending and descending machinery access points, ladders, and maintenance platforms to reach various components.
  • Reaching: Able to reach overhead, forward, and below waist level to access equipment, fixtures, and critical components.
  • Hearing: Possess excellent hearing and auditory perception to identify and diagnose equipment malfunctions, communicate with colleagues, and operate machinery safely.
  • Sitting: Ability to sit during brief breaks, complete maintenance reports, and operate diagnostic equipment or computer systems for equipment diagnostics.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Display precise fine motor skills when performing intricate repairs, conducting equipment diagnostics, and handling small components.
  • Physical Stamina: Maintain exceptional physical stamina to work in varying weather conditions, handle physically demanding tasks, and respond to equipment breakdowns efficiently.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is often exposed to outdoor weather conditions that may vary from extreme heat to extreme cold, and to construction equipment and debris, fumes, odors, airborne particles, and dust. The employee is often exposed to the possibility of bodily injury from electrical shock or mechanical hazard. The employee occasionally works in and around ongoing construction; and occasionally in high, precarious places; and is often exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

The employee is required to drive and operate heavy equipment in all weather conditions, often at remote worksites. The employee is required to wear safety equipment to perform most of the essential functions of this job.

WORK HOURS:

  • Regular Full-Time position, 40 hours per week.
  • Work hours are typically four 10-hour shifts per week on a rotating schedule.
  • This position may be required to work weekends and holidays depending on department needs.

REQUIRED TRAVEL:

Required to travel throughout the County.

TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT:

A variety of light and/or heavy equipment (e.g., snow removal equipment, graders, dozers, tandem dump trucks, pickup trucks, rollers, backhoes, sweepers, loaders, rock rakes, and a variety of tools and scanners) used in Road & Bridge construction and maintenance.

Computer and relevant software applications; calculator; telephone system; mobile phone; two-way radio.
