Pay Range Competitive salary plus benefits. COSI covers the cost for meals, transportation, and overnight accommodations during travel weeks.  

Schedule Hours scheduled for traveling presentations will normally be Monday – Friday. Occasional weekends and evenings for traveling will be scheduled. Alternate a week of shorter hours at COSI with a week of slightly longer hours when traveling alone.  

Position Requirements

Ideal candidate has experience with children and adults and an outstanding ability to educate and communicate in informal and formal learning settings.  Enthusiastic showmanship; ability to work well independently as well as with others; interest in science; excellent organizational skills; and flexibility in work schedule and attitude necessary.  Excellent driving skills for handling a mid‑sized truck; a valid Driver’s License with two or fewer points on BMV record for insurance purposes; and the ability to maintain a good driving record are essential.  Must currently have or obtain upon relocation, a Drivers License issued by the State of Ohio. PUCO required health examination and BMV record check are required.  Stamina for lifting, loading, unloading, and set-up of heavy objects is needed; in addition to standing for long periods of time.  College degree in education, science, communications, theatre/performing arts, or related field preferred.

 

Description

OBJECTIVE:  Present COSI On Wheels Outreach Programs throughout Ohio and surrounding states.  Travel throughout the region every other week to present science programs to elementary schools.  On the alternate weeks, present Interactive Videoconferencing, Student Teacher Programs, and/or Preschool Outreach Programs; work as an Exhibits & Audio Visual Technician; or assist with the development of Outreach Programs at COSI.  Typical schedule is away from the Columbus area for one full week, home for one full week with occasional weekend events.

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

A.  Presentation of COSI's Outreach Program demonstrations.

  • Duties during the week not traveling to prepare for travel:
    • Contact event organizer in advance to verify directions, set up time, number of Volunteers helping, and other pertinent details.
    • Make hotel reservations for own lodging.
  • Drive COSI owned 14-foot box truck or van to event.
  • Meet contact person and introduce COSI presence to event-site coordinators.
  • Unload and set up assembly and hands-on activities with the assistance of Volunteers.
  • Supervise Volunteer involvement, including training prior to each event and throughout the day, if needed; assisting with demonstrations; passing out brochures; etc.  Also make sure the Volunteers are presenting key scientific concepts.
  • Develop and maintain on-going, effective showmanship techniques and apply inquiry method and knowledge of science process skills in own learning and in presentations.
  • Present a 45 minute, interactive, full school assembly program in an exciting, challenging, and informative manner; introducing entertaining and educational key science concepts.
  • Supervise hands-on activities, engage and interact with students, and promote the scientific method of discovery.
  • Adapt to last minute changes in a quick manner using problem solving skills.
  • Have a flexible attitude with individual needs of host school / event coordinators.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Maintain show props and supplies needed for the successful operation of the programs as assigned, as well as, reporting exhibit and facility maintenance needs to the appropriate Team Member.
  • Keep expenditures within budgeted guidelines.  Report expenditures to the Manager of COSI On Wheels Outreach Programs on a monthly basis with an expense report.

B.  During non-travel weeks, assist in assigned areas in presenting Interactive Videoconferencing, Student Teacher Programs, and/or Preschool Outreach Programs; work as an Exhibits & Audio Visual Technician; or assist with the development of Outreach Programs at COSI with support and supervision of programs and tasks.

C.  Work various programs and special events as assigned by the Manager of COSI On Wheels Outreach Programs.

D.  Fulfill summer duties as assigned by the Manager of COSI On Wheels Outreach Programs; which could include performing COSI On Wheels Programs, working full-time in Electronic Education or Student Teacher Programs, or assisting with Outreach Program development.

E.  Engage in on-going training, which results in professional growth (such as COSI U).

F.  Support general COSI operations through participation in meetings as appropriate.

G.  Serve as an example to other COSI Team Members and Volunteers in matters of appearance, attitude, and performance in a manner best serving COSI Team Members, Volunteers, and Guests.

H.  In accordance with COSI's Guest Services Strategy and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in Guest Services by assuring Guest safety, using courtesy to drive each Guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.

I.  Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager of COSI On Wheels Outreach Programs and/or the Vice President of Programs.
