Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To provide oversight of the financial operations and assets of the National Ministries UCC (NMUCC) and work collaboratively with the Assistant Controller. Oversight includes financial policy development and implementation as well as directing the activities of the financial operations function including cash flow, budget development and reporting, and internal and external financial reporting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the CFO, and the Associate General Ministers in financial decision-making by analyzing historical financial data; identifying trends; providing forecasts; developing, guiding and training staff in budget preparation processes; preparing and interpreting budgets, and compiling financial reports for the United Church of Christ Board (UCCB), and Common Global Ministries Board (CGMB) of Directors, staff and other organizations.
  • Serve as Co-Treasurer of CGMB, in collaboration with the Treasurer of the Division of Overseas Ministries (DOM), Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), in the development of common budgets and the presentation and interpretation of financial reports for the CGMB.
  • Responsible for the financial reporting of the NMUCC’s investments, custody and accountability of their funds and other assets, staffing support of the UCCB Investment and Finance committees as requested by the CFO or Board Chair, and such liaison tasks in the business affairs of the corporations as assigned.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and reporting of all restricted funds, including the allocation of investment activity to the permanently endowed funds.
  • Direct, oversee and assess activities of NMUCC’s finances performing certain accounting functions in support of endowments, programs and other related funds and investments through the use of accounting, sales and fulfillment, and investment software and systems. Keep abreast of technological changes and keep staff up-to-date on uses of software
  • Monitor compliance of staff to policies, procedures and internal controls, identify areas needing remedial action and implement changes in consultation with the CFO, appropriate Associate General Minister and auditors.
  • Meet regularly with the Associate General Ministers on financial matters directly related to their respective portfolio of management.
  • Be an active member of the Financial Services team of the United Church of Christ Board; representing NMUCC’s interests in that process.
  • Assist the CFO in the maintenance and renewal of property and liability insurance policies of the NMUCC.
  • Monitor relations with estates, both those in place and in process, to ensure that funds are properly recorded in accordance with donor wishes. Establish new funds when warranted and provide reports to the UCCB and other organizations.
  • Provide all audit-related documents related to the financial statements for the NMUCC and certain affiliated entities including, but not limited to, the preparation of support schedules and footnotes; provide staff support to the Audit Committee.
  • Meet with mission personnel to process the newly-appointed and to facilitate home assignments and end-of-service/retirement transitions; monitor mission personnel correspondence relating to financial, health and personal concerns.
  • Review all account analysis and reconciliations completed by the financial services staff.
  • Prepare financial reports for, attend and participate in meetings of the Audit, Finance & Budget, and Investment & Endowment Committees of the United Church of Christ Board (UCCB).
  • Attend the General Synod of the United Church of Christ as requested.
  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer and/or Associate General Ministers.

Other:  This position requires 3 days in the office on a hybrid schedule.

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration is required; preference will be given to candidates with an MBA or CPA credentials, and experience in church or not-for-profit financial management. Relevant financial management experience with in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles, and extensive knowledge and experience with financial computer applications and systems.
  • Experience in preparation, evaluation and interpretation of budgets, financial statements and reports; ability to recommend and implement sound fiscal policies and procedures; experience in dealing with foreign exchange rates and tax structures.
  • Demonstrated communication, managerial, supervisory and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective and collegial working relationships with staff, mission personnel, directors and partners.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the Church, with a knowledge of, or a willingness to learn about the history and polity of the United Church of Christ and of the history, purpose and programs of the Covenanted Ministries and CGMB.
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as an understanding of mission.
  • Some travel within the U.S. is required while overseas travel may be necessary periodically.
