Description

The Mental Health Counsellor – ACT delivers counselling, rehabilitation/recovery support, treatment, crisis intervention, and advocacy to clients, and may provide psychotherapy where within the regulated scope of practice. The role includes active involvement in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of programs and services for individuals, couples, families, and the broader community. A substantial portion of client contact takes place independently in community settings.

Program-Related Activities

  • Deliver comprehensive psychosocial assessments and psychotherapy to promote client functioning and independence for individuals, couples, families, and the community.
  • Provide solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral, and motivational counselling to support clients in achieving personal goals.
  • Conduct assessment, psychoeducation, and referrals for clients with substance use concerns.
  • Support clients with:
    • Symptom management, including medication support, crisis planning, distress tolerance, and coping strategies.
    • Daily living and instrumental functioning, including employment, education, finances, housing, social activities, and transportation.
    • Housing needs, liaising with landlords, housing providers, and Landlord-Tenant Board processes.
  • Provide independent home and community visits, as well as crisis intervention during on-call, evening, and weekend hours.
  • Deliver family counselling to address conflict or crises, including formal sessions in collaboration with the team psychiatrist.
  • Conduct comprehensive client assessments using discipline-specific and multidisciplinary tools.
  • Implement mandated monitoring and interventions for clients under Community Treatment Orders (CTO) and Not Criminally Responsible (NCR) – Ontario Review Board jurisdiction, while supporting clients in meeting other legal requirements (e.g., parole, probation).
 
Position Requirements

Education

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., psychology, social work, psycho-education, or other health and social services field) with formal education in psychotherapsy is an asset.
  • Registration with a professional regulatory College in Ontario permitting the practice of psychotherapy (e.g., CRPO or OCSWSSW) is an asset. 
  • Education in psychiatric rehabilitation/recovery-based models is an asset.

Professional Experience

  • 3–5 years of full-time relevant experience in a community setting, preferably with mental health clients.
  • Proficiency in individual, group, couple, and family psychotherapy is an asset.
  • Experience providing counselling, rehabilitation, recovery support, and crisis intervention.
  • Competence in applying psychotherapy principles, psychosocial rehabilitation/recovery, case management, and transdisciplinary team collaboration is an asset. 
  • Familiarity with the Ontario Mental Health Act.
  • Experience with marginalized and diverse populations, including low-income, high-needs, newcomer, and multicultural communities.
  • Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Experience in non-profit, community-based organizations.

Key Competencies Considered 

  • Skilled in applying evidence-based psychotherapy approaches (e.g., cognitive-behavioural therapy, narrative therapy, systemic approaches) with psychotherapy training is an asset; able to use solution-focused, motivational, and cognitive-behavioural techniques within the regulated scope of practice.
  • Knowledgeable in mental health assessment, intervention, and structured support for individuals, couples, families, and communities.
  • Ability to intervene using recognized approaches, including narrative, cognitive-behavioural, systemic, or other appropriate counselling strategies.
  • Proficient in assessment, counselling, case management, crisis intervention, and harm reduction strategies.
  • Strong understanding of community resources, health services networks, and social supports to facilitate client care and recovery.
  • Maintains composure in high-risk or challenging situations, including acutely ill, intoxicated, suicidal, or hostile clients, and adverse environmental conditions.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills for client interaction, documentation, and reporting.
  • Capable of working effectively during crises and providing support in both planned and emergency interventions.

Linguistic Profile

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Some positions require French-language proficiency; fluency in additional languages relevant to client populations is an asset.

  • Personal experience as a consumer of mental health services or family involvement of mental health services would be considered an asset.

  • Availability for evening, weekend, and on-call shifts.
  • Valid driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle.
 
Salary Range $32.52/hour - $41.32/hour
