Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:   The Minister and Team Leader of the Faith Formation Ministry Team leads efforts to ensure that every UCC person is well-equipped to be growing in faith, theologically conversant, biblically literate, and active in the global mission of the church. This is accomplished by developing resources, events, partnerships and networks that will strengthen faith formation opportunities in local churches, Conferences, and other settings of the church.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead a multiple-member staff team toward the enhancement of faith formation ministries across the life of the United Church of Christ.

  • Supervise and manage staff and consultants, setting goals that will lead to measureable outcomes, events and products that strengthen faith formation ministries in the UCC.

  • Envision, structure and lead a successful staff team transition from portfolio-driven specialties to an intersectional staff model that relies on and deepens staff’s broad expertise in faith formation, including worship, liturgy, education, arts, music, spiritual practices, global traditions/influences, etc.

  • Identify, network, and lift up excellent models of faith formation in local churches and Conferences, and develop a series of “centers of excellence” events in (and resources by) local churches that will allow congregational excellence and innovation to be showcased/modeled for others.

  • Work to broaden and deepen the commitment of UCC persons toward lifelong theological education/reflection and spiritual practices that lead to maturing faith.

  • Facilitate a broad-range of constituency networks (women, men, youth, young adults, children and families, musicians, educators, outdoor ministries, etc.) in the United Church of Christ, using new models and techniques for creating and expanding these relationships.

  • Ensure coordination of the Women’s Ministry Table, and other such intra-ministry tables as needed.

  • Work collaboratively with counterparts in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), ensuring that partnership staff (working cross-denominationally) — such as part-time ministry staff to children and families — are supervised and utilized appropriately to the benefit of both denominations.

  • Expand online learning opportunities for UCC persons, in partnership with seminary faculties, Conference Ministers, and other teachers.

  • Work collaboratively with the Dean of the Amistad Chapel in identifying ways to utilize the Amistad Chapel as a place of learning and engagement for a wider, beyond-Cleveland audience.

  • Participate in the development and support of inter-cultural, multiethnic faith formation practices that demonstrate extravagant welcome.

  • Work collaboratively and offer counsel, as needed, to the Stillspeaking Writers Group and other writers’ groups, in support of the mandate of the UCC’s Publishing, Identity and Communication Ministry Team, via The Pilgrim Press, to develop successful new models of resource/curricula development that will serve the church’s emerging faith formation needs and be financially viable/sustainable.

  • Lead the creation and successful growth of Extravagance United Church of Christ, a new non-geographical congregation committed to addressing the spiritual needs/aspirations of persons regardless of their proximity to a physical UCC congregation.

  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with the Association of United Church Educators (AUCE), the UCC Musicians National Network, Inc. (UCCMNN), and other constituencies committed to excellence and innovation in UCC’s faith formation ministries.

  • Serve as a member of the LCM Leadership Team and the UCC Mission Planning Council.

Other responsibilities as assigned.
