Position Summary:

The Orthotic & Prosthetic department provides services to pediatric and adult clients who require orthotic and prosthetic devices to improve their mobility, function, and independence. As a Certified Prosthetist,CP(c ) or Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist, CPO(c) at Holland Bloorview, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive prosthetic care to children, youth, and adults. This role requires expertise in assessing, designing, fabricating, fitting, and maintaining custom prosthetic devices to help maximize function and mobility for clients. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure client-centered, goal-directed, and evidence-based care.

This is a regular full-time position (1.0 FTE or 37.5 hours per week). The position of Certified Prosthetist is aligned to Salary Band F ($40.69-$50.86/hour). The position of Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist is aligned to Salary Band G ($45.95-$57.42/hour).

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and evaluate prosthetic needs and requirements of clients of all ages and amputation levels
  • Present opinions and clinical rationale to clients/families and team members
  • Responsible for the design, fabrication and fitting of upper and lower extremity prostheses
  • Determine most effective prescription, assess fit of the prosthesis and adjust as needed
  • Evaluate gait and ensure functional needs of the clients are met
  • Perform all required aspects of prosthetic treatment plans
  • Initiate cost estimates and prepare letters of support for the payment of prosthetic devices from ADP and other paying/funding agencies
  • Assess and discuss manufacturing needs/componentry requirements with the technical staff
  • Interact with members of the interdisciplinary team and community providers to ensure an integrated service approach
  • Communicate in a timely, effective, and professional manner
  • Provide education and instruction to the client regarding the proper care of their limb and prosthesis
  • Provide education to students, visitors, and other interest groups
  • Participate in research activities involving the Orthotics and Prosthetics Department and in partnership with the Bloorview Research Institute
  • Engage in the advancement and implementation of digital technologies in clinical workflows (3D scanning, digital design, 3D printing)
  • Provide Client and Family Integrated Care, which is goal directed, evidence based, and outcome oriented in partnership with clients, families, and the interdisciplinary team
  • Support and respect the client/family’s rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs, and experiences
  • Base practice on established policies and procedures
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and support the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment for staff, clients, and families
  • Contribute as a primary and/or secondary instructor for client-based projects as part of the Clinical Methods in Orthotics/Prosthetics Program through George Brown College
  • Oversee clinical residents as a supervisor to support their ongoing development of skills, knowledge, and fundamental clinical and technical practices

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Certified Prosthetist with the Canadian Board for Certification of Prosthetists and Orthotists (CBCPO)
  • Graduate of an Orthotics Prosthetics Canada (OPC) accredited school or equivalent
  • Certification in both Prosthetics and Orthotics will be considered a valuable asset
  • Myoelectric experience preferred
  • Experience working with children preferred
  • Ability to design, fabricate and adjust custom or one-of-a-kind prosthetic devices
  • Ability to effectively organize time, work under pressure and meet deadlines while ensuring quality of prosthetic services/products
  • Proven ability to effectively address sensitive/complex issues with clients and families
  • Skills related to clinical aspects of prosthetic design and working knowledge of latest prosthetic technology
  • Demonstrated skills related to the technical aspects of prosthetic design and manufacturing
  • Excellence in the delivery of custom or one-of-a-kind prosthetic devices
  • Demonstrated understanding of a client- and family-centred care service delivery model
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary and diverse team
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with a focus on implementing evidence-based, high-quality practices to enhance client outcomes
  • Basic computer skills and document/report writing
