Position Requirements

Working knowledge of theory and practice of teaching and learning, particularly in informal environments, including program and/or exhibit development. Core competencies and experience in social science research and evaluation. Experience in research/evaluation implementation, particularly data collection, analysis, and following study protocols. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to approach and interact with public for data collection. Demonstrated ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and work on multiple projects in a fast-paced, team-based environment. Familiarity with software used for data analysis, such as SPSS and Excel. Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree or equivalent in the social sciences, education, psychology, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered.


OBJECTIVE:  To support COSI by contributing to the work of the Lifelong Learning Group, part of the Center for Research & Evaluation, by supporting the development and delivery of high-quality research, evaluation, and consulting projects with external clients in the informal learning field.  Support development and dissemination of field-wide insights into informal learning and the value of visitor studies across the informal learning field.




  1. Participate as a supporting member of research and evaluation project teams for external clients, as assigned, including:
    1. Collect data using a variety of protocols, methods, and technologies
    2. Contribute to writing data collection protocols; train and supervise others in data collection
    3. Develop and manage databases, including data entry; train and monitor others in data entry
    4. Analyze data using quantitative and qualitative methods
    5. Write evaluation/research reports, data summaries
    6. Conduct literature searches and reviews
    7. Follow policies and procedures regarding data and report storage and use.
    8. Contribute to other project tasks, including instrument development, study design, and dissemination, as assigned by project directors
  2. Contribute to the development of cross-project intellectual capital within the Lifelong Learning Group and the field at large:
    1. Participate in the development and implementation of training and professional development for the larger field and for COSI staff, as assigned;
    2. Share relevant project findings, challenges, or insights with LLG and CRE colleagues, as appropriate;
    3. Present timely findings, methods, and relevant issues to the larger field at conferences and symposia;
    4. Contribute to articles and papers in peer-reviewed journals and other trade publications and media.
  3. Support general COSI operations through participation in meetings as appropriate.
  4. Serve as an example to other COSI Team Members, including paid Team, Volunteers, and Partners, in matters of appearance, attitude, and performance in a manner best serving COSI Team and Guests.
  5. In accordance with COSI’s Guest Services Strategy, and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in Guest Services by assuring Guest safety, using courtesy to drive each Guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Research Associate and Manager.
