The Family Support Worker - Perinatal Parent Support Program operates community-based programmes and services for parents, caregivers and children using a community development approach, under the direction of the Perinatal Parent Support Program Coordinator, and in consultation with community residents. The FSCW delivers educational programmes focused on prenatal education/parenting and/or one on one parenting support to vulnerable families, pregnant and/or with infants/young children, both on site and in satellite locations. This work is done within the scope of practice mandated by the relevant professional college, if applicable.

 
Position Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, Social services worker diploma, or other health-related education required; Prenatal teaching experience required. ECE an asset, Midwifery/doula training an asset or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

Professional Experience

  • Over three to five years of experience working with perinatal families and delivering prenatal education.
  • Proven track record in leading parent education and support programs for families with infants and young children.
  • Extensive experience providing supportive services, outreach, and counselling to low-income, multicultural, and vulnerable families. Skilled in assessment, case management, crisis intervention, and supportive counselling techniques.
  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of community resources in Ottawa, particularly those related to family and children’s services. Strong ability to build networks and collaborate with relevant program and service providers.
  • Experienced in applying adult education principles and facilitating group dynamics in both in-person and virtual settings.
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to working with marginalized and diverse populations, including newcomer, low-income, and high-needs families. Background in program development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Experienced in working within non-profit, community-based organizations.

Key Competencies

  • Comprehensive knowledge of perinatal health, birth physiology, infant and early childhood development, and mental health. Proficient in trauma-informed, culturally safe care and parenting support frameworks.
  • Skilled in assessment, intervention techniques, and navigating community and specialized resources, with a strong understanding of family dynamics, especially in low-income, high-risk contexts.
  • Familiar with the Ontario Prenatal Education Curriculum.

Linguistic Profile

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • A second language (French and/or relevant to our client population) an asset.

  • Commitment to health promotion concepts, strategies, and philosophy.
  • Commitment to community-based health care and social services, and strength-based philosophy and practices.

  • Regular access to a vehicle is required.
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends if required.
 
Salary Range $27.19 - $31.98 per hour
