Position Requirements

Ideal candidate is a team player with the ability to work in a dynamic, boisterous, ever-changing environment; has a passion for educating the public using a variety of techniques; and enjoys working with people of all ages and backgrounds.  Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with children, adults, parents, teachers, and Team Members required.  Must be comfortable performing in front of large and small audiences, including one-on-one interactions; theatrical presentations, such as scripted interactions; and in a workshop setting.  Interaction audition required of all qualified applicants.  A significant amount of bending, pulling, standing and climbing is required for this position.  A High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.  Strong education, science, and/or theatre background(s) preferred.

 

Description

OBJECTIVE:  Enhance the Guest experience by bringing out the inquisitive nature in each individual and incorporating methods such as inquiry, theatre, and demonstration with the Exhibition Areas (specifically MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition, COSI’s Energy Explorers and Gadgets Exhibitions), hallways, and Attractions.  Support COSI’s mission of sparking interest, piquing curiosity, and facilitating the process of learning and discovering more about the world.

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

A.  Perform necessary maintenance, setup, teardown, and the general operations required in COSI’s Traveling Exhibition MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition and COSI’s permanent Exhibitions: Gadgets and Energy Explorers.

B.  Educate and interact with COSI Guests through involvement in activities, first person interpretation, performances, workshop settings, and utilization of the Exhibition Spaces themselves.  Will need to use a variety of methods and learning theories to accommodate a wide range of ages, audiences, and spaces.

C.  Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of the Floor Faculty Philosophy including:

  • Team education policies.
  • Educational philosophy, methods, & techniques.
  • Setup, cleanup, maintenance, and emergency procedures.

D.  Operate the High Wire Unicycle; a unique experience where you ensure the safety of a Guest who will pedal a unicycle on a 1.5 inch cable, 17 feet above ground.  This requires a significant amount of bending, pulling, and climbing.

E.  Mentor and supervise youth and adult Volunteers, helping build not only a scientific foundation for success, but also foundational public speaking and job skills.

F.  Support general COSI operations through participation in meetings as appropriate.

G.  Serve as an example to other COSI Team Members and Volunteers in matters of appearance, attitude, and performance in a manner best serving COSI paid and Volunteer Team Members and Guests.

H.  In accordance with COSI's Guest Services Strategy, and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in Guest Services by assuring Guest safety, using courtesy to drive each Guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.

I.  Perform other duties as assigned by the Faculty Leader for Attractions & Supervision and/or any of the other Faculty Leaders or Programs Team Managers.
