Position Requirements

Current enrollment in a high school or home school program; successful completion of the COSI Volunteer Program Probationary Period; obtained a Green STAR or currently working toward a Green STAR; passed COSI’s Lead Volunteer Assessment (or received a satisfactory performance evaluation); in satisfactory disciplinary standing at COSI; a strong interest in the COSI Career Ladder; and a commitment to the COSI Team and to furthering COSI’s mission are the required minimum qualifications for this position.


Ideal candidate has a passion for educating the public; a willingness to develop characters and research science content; and enjoys working with people of all ages and backgrounds.  Excellent leadership and communication skills; the ability to mentor others; and the ability to interact effectively with children, adults, parents, teachers, and Team Members required.  Must be comfortable performing in front of large and small audiences, including one-on-one interactions; and able to stand long periods of time.


OBJECTIVE:  Take a visible leadership role within the Volunteer Program by fostering the success of Volunteers on the Career Ladder.  Assist in the supervision of youth and lead Volunteers, lead group and one-on-one trainings sessions for youth and lead Volunteers, complete evaluations of youth and lead Volunteers, and assist with new Volunteer interviews. Present activities in workshops and learn live shows. Provide Guests with a hands-on-experience through asking questions, facilitating exploration, leading activities in workshops and hallways, and presenting shows. 



  1. Facilitate group trainings such as Workshops, Presentation Skills, Guest Services, and Early Childhood Development.
  2. Interview perspective Volunteers.
  3. Assist in the supervision and mentoring of Volunteers.
  4. Assist the Volunteer & Community Resource Office by turning on and off the computer in Volunteer Space.
  5. Evaluate Volunteers in workshops by completing de-briefs and other ongoing evaluations.
  6. Educate and interact with Guests using inquiry-based discovery plans, floor vehicles, and shows in COSI’s Exhibition Areas and performance spaces.  Utilize a variety of methods and learning theories to accommodate a wide range of ages, audiences, and spaces.
  7. Perform necessary maintenance, setup, and teardown of program materials and exhibition spaces; for daily operations and special events.
  8. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of COSI’s workshops and Exhibition Areas including:
    1. Philosophy, policies, and educational methods and techniques.
    2. Function, performance, and operation of all exhibits and program elements.
    3. Setup, cleanup, maintenance, and emergency procedures in exhibitions and programs.
  9. Support general COSI operations through participation in meetings as appropriate.
  10. Serve as an example to other COSI Team Members and Volunteers in matters of appearance, attitude, and performance in a manner best serving COSI paid and Volunteer Team Members and Guests.
  11. In accordance with COSI's Guest Services Strategy, and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in Guest Services by assuring Guest safety, using courtesy to drive each Guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Team Leader for Volunteers, Programs; other area Team Leaders; and/or the Director of Lifelong Learning Initiatives.
