GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The purpose and mission of Local Church Ministries (LCM) is to encourage and support the local congregations of the United Church of Christ in the fulfillment of God’s mission.  It supports the vision of the UCC as a multiracial, multicultural church, accessible to all, as it is lived out in and through the local congregations.

The Local Church Ministries Church Building and Loan Fund (CB&LF) is a resource of the United Church of Christ.  It is dedicated to assisting new local congregations with the purchase of their first building.  This is accomplished in partnership with the congregation and the Conference.  In conducting its mission and ministry it seeks to develop mature and vital, multicultural, multiracial, accessible to all, justice oriented UCC congregations from young or renewing churches.

Administration of the CB&LF portfolio requires specialized reports and oversight, financial analysis of applications for loans, ongoing examination of documents, answering customer inquiries, and preparation of regular accounting entries. This position also provides specific accounting functions in support of Local Church Ministries.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Design and prepare on a timely basis the monthly financial reports and various related statements that reflect the CB & LF financial condition;

 

  • Assist in the formulation of the department’s budget in compliance with applicable budget policy and guidelines;

 

  • Monitor expenditures to assure that the department remains within the budget;

 

  • Ensure that records and financial data are prepared and available for audits;

 

 

  • Review accounting documents to ensure accuracy of information and calculations and produce or direct correcting entries;

 

  • Ensure that the accounts are financially accurate.  Maintain quarterly reconciliations on accounts payable, receivables.  Make correcting journal entries in assigned areas if necessary; 

 

  • Perform cash management functions by reconciling monthly cash and investments.  Review main checking account balance and transactions daily.  Send out account balance notifications as requested by Treasurer and or Executive Director

 

  • Oversee cash management program including recommendations for investment of short-term excess funds and preparation of related reports;

 

  • Monitor and maintain cash levels set by Executive Director.  Write up transfers of cash between accounts periodically as requested by Treasurer and or Executive Director;

 

  • Review and approve LCM and CBLF AMEX reports and reimbursement reports;

 

  • Monitor funds held in trust for distributions and annual reporting requirements;

 

  • Examine, analyze and interpret accounting records for management;

 

  • Assuring and maintaining the accuracy of loan/special mortgage/grant files on the mortgage system;

 

  • Coordinate ACH, check requests and wire transfers with Financial Services;

 

  • Assist in financial aspects of Partners In Building Program;

 

  • Provide assistance in loan application process including analysis of financial reports;

 

  • Obtain quarterly financial statements from borrowers as needed;

 

  • Assume other duties as assigned

 

 

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

 

  • Bachelors degree in accounting, finance or related area;

 

  • Demonstrated experience in accounting and financial management, with a minimum of 3-5 years experience that shows a progressive track record of increasing responsibility;

 

  • High degree of computer proficiency and systems, specifically advanced spreadsheet skills (Excel) and word processing.  Experience on American Fundware, or The Mortgage Office helpful;

 

  • Comfort and ability to clearly explain and interpret financial data, reports and budgets to non-financial staff and volunteers;

 

  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to pluralism in the workplace as well as in one=s understanding of mission;

 

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently;

 

  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills;

 

  • Highly organized, propensity for planning and adherence to deadlines;

 

  • Competency in leadership planning, development, training, and supervision.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of the polity, history and structures of the United Church of Christ preferred.
