Description

Primary Purpose:

Companion Animal Care Associate provides exceptional care for animals and facilitating successful adoptions. This role involves ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of animals through daily care routines, including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring their health. Additionally, they support guests in the adoption process by providing information, matching animals with suitable homes, and promoting responsible pet ownership. This dual role is essential in maintaining a high standard of animal care and enhancing the adoption experience for guests.

Animal Care

  • Care for, feed, water and observe animals.
  • Report observed health or behavior issues to the Care Coordinator.
  • Transporting animals within the shelter.
  • Maintain animal inventory daily.
  • Responsible for proper cleaning and disinfection of assigned areas daily.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to the Care Coordinator.
  • Keep current inventory of necessary program supplies and report shortages to Care Coordinator.
  • Provide information to the public about Houston SPCA programs and promoting good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
  • Advise potential adopters of Houston SPCA adoption benefits, policies and procedures.
  • Protect all confidential information, including customers, donors, animals and internal communications.
  • Represent the Houston SPCA by providing excellent customer service and focus.
  • Additional tasks as assigned by the Animal Care Coordinator.

Adoptions

 

  • Greets the public and provides information and directions as needed.
  • Advises potential adopters of Houston SPCA adoption benefits, policies and procedures.
  • Provides information to the public about Houston SPCA programs and promotes good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
  • Receives mail and/or coordinates the mailing of packages. Ensures that all packages requiring immediate attention or special handling are delivered to the addressee upon receipt.
  • Processes adoption paperwork, obtaining signatures, and receiving payments.
  • Files all paperwork in the appropriate areas.
  • Maintains the adoption counseling area and lobby.
  • Maintains assigned equipment, supplies and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to the Care Coordinators.
  • Keeps current inventory of necessary program supplies and reports shortages to Care Coordinators.
  • Protects all confidential information, including customers, donors, animals and internal communications.
  • Represents the Houston SPCA by providing excellent customer service and focus.
  • Solicits donations as required.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • High school diploma, or its equivalent, and minimum of one year related work experience
  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Understand, promote and follow the mission of the Houston SPCA
  • Understand, comprehend and communicate the Houston SPCA adoption policies and procedures as well as our Houston SPCA partners and their respective products and services
  • Knowledge of the Houston SPCA policies and protocols, including but not limited to admitting animals, cleaning and medical protocols
  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior
  • Ability to handle animals safely, with patience and gentleness despite noise and stressful conditions
  • Ability to display exceptional customer service and represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Houston SPCA, with volunteers, the public and be a team player
  • Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and electronic form
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively
  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License and insurable under Houston SPCA auto policy
  • Ability to work unscheduled hours
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
