Description

Position Objectives:

• To strategize, create, and conduct impact animal protection litigation

• To supervise and coordinate all client litigation, both offensive and defensive, utilizing in-house and outside counsel

• To act on behalf of the general counsel when he or she is absent or unavailable

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Develop and lead high-profile, strategic litigation for the advancement of animal protection under the law

• Coordinate and lead response to defensive litigation

• Conduct media interviews, including on-camera, and other public speaking about cases

• Identify, select, and manage outside litigation counsel on all matters under supervision

• Supervise all attorneys and staff members assigned to matters under the areas of responsibility and supply appropriate training

• Provide legal support to client management, campaigners, researchers, and caseworkers

• Research, interpret, and apply applicable federal and state statutes, regulations, and case law

• Report on weekly developments in all significant matters as well as future courses of action and related deadlines

• Monitor issues and cases for potential legal action

• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

 
Position Requirements

• J.D. and a minimum of 10 years of litigation experience in both federal and state courts

• Member in good standing of a state bar

• Preferred experience in civil litigation, administrative law, constitutional law, and animal rights law

• Minimum of five years of supervisory or management experience

• Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and PETA campaigns

• Proven excellent legal research and writing skills

• Proven excellent strategic-thinking and analytical skills

• Proven ability to handle multiple tasks within strict time constraints

• Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle

• Support for PETA's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA's positions on issues

• Commitment to the objectives of the organization
