ROLE

The Family Support Community Worker operates community-based programmes and services for parents, caregivers and children using a community development approach, under the direction of the Perinatal Parent Support Program Coordinator, and in consultation with community residents. The FSCW delivers educational programmes focused on prenatal education/parenting and/or one on one parenting support to vulnerable families, pregnant and/or with infants/young children, both on site and in satellite locations. This work is done within the scope of practice mandated by the relevant professional college, if applicable.

 
Position Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Education
    • Bachelor’s degree in social work, Social services worker diploma, or other health-related education required; Prenatal teaching experience required. ECE an asset, Midwifery/doula training an asset or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

  1. Professional experience
    • 3-5 years working with perinatal families/ teaching prenatal education
    • Three to five years full-time experience in running parent education or support programs to families with infants/young children.
    • Three to five years full-time experience providing supportive services and outreach to low income, multicultural families, and vulnerable families.
    • Experience with current assessment, counselling, case management and crisis intervention techniques as related to providing supportive counselling to clients.
    • In-depth and broad knowledge of community resources, especially family services and children’s resources in Ottawa.
    • Experience in establishing networks with relevant program and service providers.
    • Experience with adult education principles and group dynamics.
  • Experience in coordinating and delivering workshops using adult education principles and group dynamics, including in a virtual environment.
  • Experience and interest in working with marginalized and diverse clientele, such as low-income, high-needs, and newcomer families, and a variety of multicultural communities.
  • Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experience in a non-profit, community-based organization.

 

  1. Key Competencies
    • Knowledge of perinatal health and anatomy and physiology of birth
    • Knowledge of the Ontario Prenatal Education Curriculum
    • Knowledge of trauma informed care/cultural safety
    • Knowledge of infant and early childhood mental health and development
    • Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in current assessment and intervention techniques.
    • Thorough knowledge and understanding of community resources and community-based health care.
    • Knowledge of resources for children with special needs.
    • Knowledge of parenting support approaches and supportive framework.
    • Understanding of family dynamics and issues relevant to working with low-income (multi-risks) parents/caregivers
    • Knowledge of community resources (family services and resources).
    • Ability to integrate new knowledge gained through professional development and current leading practices into new and on-going programs to ensure highest programming quality.
    • Ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, in English.
    • Good organizational skills; flexibility; ability to adapt to changing situations.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary team environment.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting.
    • Demonstrated ability to use virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom and Teams, use social media platforms to promote programming

 

  1. Linguistic Profile
    • Some positions are designated under Carlington’s French Language Services Plan.
      • French Oral Expression: Advanced
      • French Oral Comprehension: Advanced +
      • French Reading: Advanced +
      • French Written Expression: Advanced
    • French/English bilingualism is preferred for all positions.
    • A third language relevant to our client population is an asset.

Salary Range $27.19 - $31.98 per hour
