The Lactation Consultant (LC) assists in the delivery of lactation support and promotes healthy lifestyle choices for the residents of the community. The LC functions interdependently with the other members of the Healthy Growth and Development team within a health promotion framework. The LC provides individual and group pre- and postnatal breastfeeding support and educational services to community members, while respecting and supporting the family’s infant feeding objectives within the Baby-Friendly Initiative framework. She will protect, promote, and support breastfeeding within the communities served. The LC functions interdependently with the other members of the Healthy Growth and Development team within a health promotion framework.

 
Position Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

1. Education

  • IBCLC Certificate or equivalent
  • Additional relevant courses/training

2. Professionnal Experience

  • Three to five years experience working with new families in a community setting or combination of community and hospital or public health settings; experience in a primary care setting is an asset;
  • Three to five years’ experience in prenatal and postnatal care of women- infants dyads and situational assessments of nursing mothers-infants dyads
  • Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation
  • Thorough knowledge and proficiency in current maternal/infant physical assessment and treatment methods

3. Key comptences

  • Knowledge of the Baby-Friendly Initiative framework
  • Understanding of the various cultural, physical, emotional, and psychological attitudes toward delivery, nursing, and the art of parenting
  • Experience with individual consultations and facilitation of groups
  • Comprehensive knowledge of community resources
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision in a high stress environment
  • Interest in and positive attitude toward community based programming and service delivery
  • Sensitivity to the needs of the disadvantaged; experience serving multicultural groups.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

4. Linguistic Profile

  • Bilingualism is preferred;
  • A third language relevant to our client population is an asset

 

Specific Areas of Responsibility:

1. Program Related Activities

  • Provide overall coordination, promotion, and delivery of breastfeeding support services and related initiatives for CCHC
  • Provide quality breastfeeding support services according to the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada and the World Health Organization-Baby-Friendly Initiative best practices and standards
  • Provide one-on-one and telephone/virtual lactation support services to nursing families, including clinical assessment and intervention, information, and referrals.
  • Provide one on one and telephone infant-feeding support to all mothers, nursing and non-nursing
  • Seek opportunities to develop new breastfeeding and prenatal support programs responsive to community needs
  • Communicate with the Primary Health Care and Parent-Child colleagues regarding clients when necessary to ensure optimal wrap-around care
  • Perform home visits on an as needed-basis
  • Develop and deliver educational topics relevant to pre and post-natal families when requested (BUNS, playgroups, Parent-Ed groups, other…)
  • Lead the Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) for Carlington CHC
  • Provide education opportunities to Carlington staff regarding the centre’s breastfeeding policy and BFI commitment.
  • Develop promotional mechanisms to reach parents in the Carlington catchment area and encourage participation.
  • Ensure maintenance of equipment for optimal lactation support service: order supplies, maintain inventory, and ensure equipment is sterilized and autoclaved as needed
  • Ensure accountability by providing statistics and reports of activities, as required, and keeping client records, as required, within the safeguard of confidentiality
  • Participates in chart reviews per team protocol
  • Participate in the orientation and supervision of volunteers and students involved in lactation support services
  • Perform any other related task that may be required

2. Community Liaison

  • In partnership with other agencies, when necessary, prepare and conduct awareness and information programs for parents
  • Develop and maintain effective communications with other community agencies and networks to ensure that services meet the needs of the community

3. Team Related Activities

  • Work as a member of the team and participate in staff development opportunities
  • Participate in staff, team, Board and committee meetings, and other centre activities, as appropriate

 

 
Salary Range $35.03 - $41.21 per hour
