Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:  Provides leadership in the development and production of program resources for basic mission education and interpretation among conferences, associations and local churches within the United Church of Christ (UCC.)  The Mission Education and Interpretation Program of WCM, in cooperation with other bodies of the UCC, seeks to serve both mission goals of the wider ministries of the church, including Global Ministries, and to participate in providing resources and insights for mission education in general in the UCC.  Because global ministries are a cooperative effort between the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), this office works in close collaboration with its counterpart in the Division of Overseas Ministries of the Disciples to produce materials that interpret the work and mission of the Common global Ministries Board (CGMB) of the two churches.

The MEI executive carries responsibility for planning, budget development, program administration and implementation, coordination, and the ongoing evaluation of the WCM’s and, with Disciples colleagues, of CGMB’s mission education and interpretation.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONISIBILITIES:

 

  • Collaborate with colleagues in the UCC and Disciples offices, to facilitate and foster educational and interpretative priorities.

 

  • Implement the communication strategy for both Global Ministries and Wider Church Ministries programs, including coordination of plan for resourcing individuals and congregations on global mission.

 

  • Teach and guide congregations, conferences, regions, and other constituency groups in ways that enable them to experience the global church as part of their lives in worship, faith, witness and service, including coordination of UCC church partnerships with global partners by assisting with church processes and the maintenance of vital partnerships.

 

  • Oversee and coordinate Social media emphasis and activity for Global and Wider Church Ministries

 

  • Co-direct with the Mission Interpretation and Constituency Relationships Office, the Ministries and Mission Interpretation Project (MMI), and other new mission advocacy strategies.

 

  • Develop effective communication tools, such as email updates, etc. for the MMI project, for Global Mission Church designees, as well as for WCM and Global Ministries, with conferences, regions and local congregations to heighten awareness of global mission across the denomination.

 

  • Create and promote new MMI training materials and conduct training sessions both regionally and nationally.

 

  • Guide and advise in collaboration with PIC, LCM, JWM, public relations matters for the UCC national setting.

 

  • Oversee creation and production of promotional material for Global and Wider Church Ministries, including editing videotapes of missionaries and international guests.

 

  • Collaborate with MEI team on annual Global Mission theme and Global Ministries Sunday emphasis

 

  • Consult and collaborate with the Executive Minister and the leadership team on communication needs.

 

  • Serve as a spokesperson for WCM/GM as a member of various UCC tables such as the communications table (monthly), Calendar of Prayer, General Synod display design planning, etc.

 

  • Serve as a representative of WCM/GM in groups such as Mission Planning Council, Women's Ministries, Family and Children's Ministries, Racial\Ethnic Ministries, Haystack Society, etc.

 

  • Participate as FOCUS staff representative, producing quarterly newsletter

 

  • Invite, edit and prepare the writings and stories from missionaries for education and interpreting mission.

 

  • Produce or co- produce and edit the Monthly Mission Stories, weekly prayers and mission moments by missionaries, and Global Ministries Calendar, etc.

 

  • Write or edit and approve contributions to Calendar of Prayer, UCC annual report and other UCC publications on behalf of WCM/CGM.

 

  • Monitor written and oral inquiries for information about WCM and Global Ministries.

 

  • Monitor the development, expansion and enhancement of web sites, displays and media resources for programs and area offices.

 

  • Oversee distribution of WCM/GM promotional materials including news releases, press packets, photo ops, etc. for current events.

 

  • Participate in the creation of resource materials in collaboration with each program including OGHS, that contributes to the effectiveness of that mission.

 

  • Assist in assessing the resource needs of each program area and achieving the desired results.

 

  • Supervise dissemination of current resources to WCM/GM board members and FOCUS members, Christian educators and resource center directors.

 

  • Monitor the MEI budget, resources, mailing data and resource availability.

 

  • Supervise and evaluate the work of the MEI program associate, program associate for advocacy and education, and administrative support person.

 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Minister.
 
Position Requirements

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Listed below are desired qualities representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform successfully in this position:

 

  • College degree in related field or equivalent experiences or a combination of the both.

 

  • Understanding of polity and structures of the United Church of Christ and its ministry and mission.

 

  • Commitment to and theological understanding of mission in its broad range of concerns.

 

  • Demonstrated excellent writing, editing and communication skills including the ability to conceptualize and develop print and media resources.

 

  • Ability to articulate clearly a biblically-based theological understanding of mission.

 

  • Ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently

 

  • Commitment to the affirmative action/employment opportunity policies of the UCC.

 

  • Computer literacy, with experience in work with Web pages.

 

  • Knowledge and familiarity with social media avenues and their role and importance in global
  • mission. 

 

  • Ability and willingness to travel within the U.S. about 25% of the time.  Global travel is intermittent, averaging a trip every other year.
