Description

The Program Director, Healthy Growth and Development (HGD) manages and supervises the coordination, development, delivery of perinatal, children and youth programs, services, and activities to ensure that the needs of the parents, children, and youth in our community are being met appropriately. This includes responsibility for the the licensed Headstart childcare centre.

As a member of both the Strategic Leadership Team and Operational Management Team, the Program Director participates in the development and implementation of the strategies, aims and objectives of the organization.

 
Position Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Education
  • Masters’ degree in social work, health promotion, child development, or other relevant health, social services, or related fields, or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.

 

  1. Professional experience
    • A minimum of five years of experience with progressive responsibility in a community-based human services managerial and leadership role.
    • Extensive experience in: strategic planning and evaluation; supervision of employees; proposal development; managing funding contracts; developing policies and procedures; and managing administrative functions.
    • Experience in a non-profit, community-based organization.

 

  1. Key Competencies
    • Demonstrated commitment and knowledge of community-based health care and social services.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and experience in supervising and directing staff to ensure an effective and efficient working environment.
    • Knowledge of Health/Social Policy issues, Health Promotion and Community Development principles, especially as related to the Childcare and Early Years sector, Youth, and Family support programs.
    • Strong critical analysis, problem-solving, planning, decision-making, leadership, organizational and change management skills.
    • Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Ability to develop and implement programs using an inter-disciplinary collaborative approach.
    • Knowledge of and ability to apply health promotion concepts, strategies, and philosophy.
    • Understanding of general research policies as applied to community health agencies.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, in English.
    • High level of organizational and time management skills in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to prioritize, to be flexible, and to meet deadlines.
    • Demonstrated ability to model “client-centred” service delivery.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse, multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary team environment.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including all Microsoft Office programs, and client database software.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

       1. Program Director responsibilities

The Program Director oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of parent-child and youth programs aligned with the centre’s strategic goals. They manage budgets, funding proposals, and community needs assessments while ensuring policy compliance. The role includes supervising staff, supporting hiring and HR functions, and maintaining program accountability. They facilitate team collaboration, ensure adequate resources, and promote social change through advocacy. The Director also supports research activities and provides input on organizational initiatives as needed.

        2. Networking and Program Development Activities

The Program Director actively builds and maintains partnerships with internal teams, external organizations, and community stakeholders to develop and enhance programs. They promote health initiatives, especially for families with young children, by leveraging media, networks, and collaborative efforts. The role involves identifying resource needs, advocating for programs, and increasing community awareness. They also participate in relevant local and provincial networks to ensure alignment with broader health and social service strategies. Continuous professional development is emphasized to keep staff informed of current trends and innovations.

        3. Team-related Activities

The Program Director contributes to the overall functioning of the centre by actively participating in staff development, leadership committees, and organizational planning. As part of the Strategic Leadership Team, they help shape policies and improve internal procedures. They ensure continuity of services by stepping in during emergencies or staff absences and support inter-team collaboration. Additionally, they attend relevant meetings, contribute to policy development, and take on special tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.

 
Salary Range $52.33 - 61.65 per hour
