Position Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative and experienced family therapist to join the Get Up and Go (GUaG) Pediatric Persistent Pain program. GUaG is Canada’s first inpatient intensive interdisciplinary pediatric pain service, supporting youth and their families to regain function and return to usual activities, including school and recreation. As an integral member of the interprofessional team, the family therapist will provide trauma-informed assessments, collaboratively set goals and provide psychotherapy to families and clients.

This is a regular part-time position and we welcome applicants with availability for 15 - 22.5 hours per week (0.4 - 0.6 FTE). Please indicate your availability in your application. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct family-centred strengths-based assessments of family’s psychosocial needs, strengths, psychosocial functioning, and adjustment with having a child with chronic pain
  • Develop and lead strategies to promote the uptake of evidence- informed practice and family system therapy interventions to optimize outcomes of chronic pain clients and families
  • Develop and deliver programs for caregivers learning to support the emotional regulation of children with chronic pain, co-occurring medical complexity and/or mental health diagnoses.
  • Design individualized family treatment plans collaboratively with the family based on assessed needs, in collaboration with the other team members of the GUaG program
  • Consult and collaborate with the interprofessional team members to share progression towards therapeutic goals, ensure goals are aligned across the program
  • Perform duties in accordance with relevant legislation and organizational policies and procedures
  • Complete detailed and comprehensive documentation in accordance with Holland Bloorview best practises and documentation policies, CRPO or relevant college requirements.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain workload measurement and related data collection, as required.
  • Contribute to the academic agenda at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital by supervising students
  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered in good standing with the applicable regulatory college, including the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO), College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO), and/or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Registrants must be able to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy
  • Completion of a master’s degree from an accredited university
  • Post-masters education and training in family systems therapy and registered marriage and family therapist preferred (RMFT)
  • Demonstrated additional training in therapeutic modalities providing evidence-based therapies for emotion regulation, such as, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, and other empirically supported modalities
  • A minimum of three years’ experience providing family therapy in a mental health setting is strongly preferred
  • Clinical experience with chronic pain, somatization and common co-occurring mental health concerns is preferred
  • Clinical training and experience in non-violent crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment and de-escalation strategies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., Child Youth and Family Services Act, Regulated Health Care Professions Act, Psychotherapy Act, Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act, Health Care Consent Act, Substitute Decisions Act as well as commitment to upholding the principles of the Code of Ethics of the College of Psychotherapists or Nurse or Social Workers or Occupational Therapists or Psychologists)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, time management, planning and evaluation skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to the development of professional practice, life-long learning and excellence in client care
  • Demonstrated understanding of conflict resolution and ability to offer and receive constructive feedback
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion principles and practices
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required
