Public Health Foundation Enterprises (PHFE) and the Vector-Borne Disease Section (VBDS) of the California Department of Public Health Services (CDPH) is recruiting a full-time assistant microbiologist. Employment is provided by PHFE. The Vector Borne Disease Laboratory tests environmental samples from throughout California for vector-borne and zoonotic diseases. These samples include sentinel chicken sera for arboviruses such as West Nile virus, ticks for Lyme disease bacteria and other tick-borne diseases, and wild vertebrate blood samples for plague. Results are used to inform, control, or education activities by state and local government. The Assistant Project Coordinator (Vector) position will be located at Vector-Borne Disease Section, California Department of Public Health in Richmond, CA. The position reports to the Supervising Public Health Biologist and works closely with the Vector-borne Disease Laboratory Director and Microbiologist.



  • The candidate must perform, interpret, and report appropriate serological assays on diagnostic and reference specimens.
  • Conduct tick dissections and perform direct flourescent antibody assay on tick tissues to detect Borrelia spirochetes.
  • Extract DNA from anthropod samples and test for molecular evidence of zoonotic pathogens using nested and/or RT-PCR assays.
  • Periodic cell culture work under BSL3 conditions.
  • Prepare and stock lab reagents, wash glassware, and do other laboratory maintenance procedures as needed.
  • Use multiple databases to enter records and report results.
  • Work with VBDS staff to ensure accuracy and timeliness of vector-borne disease test results..
Position Requirements


The position requires knowledge of standard laboratory practices and sterile techniques, including experience with microscopes, autoclaves, electronic balances, pipettes, and standard sterilization techniques.  Candidate must be able to interpret scientific protocols and follow them explicitly.  Required attributes also include the following: familiarity with databases, problem solving, multi-tasking, dependability, and the ability to meet deadlines.  Excellent communication skills, the ability to work well with others and strong work ethic are absolutely essential.


  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology or related field and one or more years of professional laboratory experience in molecular biology or microbiology.
