2025 Externship Program Period

The 2025 Externship Program spans from May 19, 2025 – August 1, 2025. Once accepted, an extern may begin the program on Monday, May 19th or later. The program concludes Friday, August 1st.

The externship will be conducted in person. The time commitment is a minimum of 25 hours per week. The LRC Director will determine the number of externships to be granted during the program period.

Application Criteria:
Students must have completed at least one (1) full year at an ABA accredited law school to be eligible. Students interested in an externship must submit:
• A cover letter
• Resume
• Letter of Recommendation from an instructor (those enrolled in an internship/externship program at their school are excused from this requirement).

Submissions must be by email to: courtapps@geneseecountymi.gov. The subject line of the email message must read: Summer Externship Application. The deadline for applications is April 15, 2025.

Duties:
Successful applicants will serve in the Legal Resource Center (LRC) located within the Genesee County Courthouse. The 7th Judicial Circuit Court and the Genesee County Probate Court are located in this facility. The LRC mission is to promote coordination and quality of support for persons representing themselves in civil legal matters in Michigan.

The externship entails assisting members of the public to connect with Michigan Legal Help and other law related materials and to serve as a resource for identifying other Genesee County or community resources. The LRC Director is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and is the primary supervisor for externs. Assigned duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Assisting the public in the use of Michigan Legal Help and other resources;
• Assisting the public to locate other legal information such as statutes, court rules, and filing procedures;
• Answering questions regarding legal forms;
• Responding to inquiries regarding court operations and routing calls to appropriate offices; and
• Performing other assigned tasks related to the operation of the LRC.

Acceptance into the Program
Successful applicants will be notified. A criminal background check and orientation are required before service may commence.
