GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Ministry Team is responsible for the development and implementation of a vision for faith formational ministry which nurtures and supports the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual growth in the Christian community of children in particular and families in general and assist us in living into a more holistic, cross-ministry approach to faith formation.

The Ministry Team works through the general/national and regional/conference/district churches to assist congregations in this ministry. The work includes, but is not limited to: leadership training, program and resource development, consultation, and advocacy within the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and in its ecumenical efforts.

The duties and responsibilities of the position will be shared among a team of three persons.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Minister for Children and Families will work with a team and constituents to:

Advocate:

  • Advocate by being the voice of young children within the structures of the denominations (local churches, regions/conferences/districts and general/national church);
  • Advocate for the rights and needs of children beyond congregations in ensuring equal access to quality education, healthcare, and childcare;
  • Advocate by being the voice of all young children and their families to governmental and social service agencies on behalf of local churches and general/national church;
  • Advocate child protection and ensuring safe environments – both within and beyond congregations;
  • Advocate Light a Candle for Children Prayer Vigil and Children's Sabbath;
  • Advocate public education;
  • Advocate for children with special needs, as well as other children who have been historically oppressed;
  • Advocate for inclusion of children in all aspects of assemblies/synods and other national gatherings, from programming to worship to mission opportunities.

Educate and train using the following resources and opportunities:

  • All UCC/DOC curricula and resources related to families and children, including Faith Practices and Children Worship & Wonder
  • Sexuality Education including Our Whole Lives
  • Church School and Weekday Programming, including LOGOS Ministries
  • Vacation Bible Schools – continue partnership with Global Ministries
  • Kids to Kids – continue partnership with Global Ministries
  • Christian Parenting – continue partnership with the ARK (Adults Relating to Kids) Group, Inc.
  • Family and Children Events – Children and the Church (UCC); Children Welcome! (DOC); Justice LED trainings and resources
  • Other resources and opportunities as appropriate

Develop resources and make recommendations related to children and families on:

  • Baptism and confirmation materials for congregations;
  • Helping congregations plan and conduct services of worship that are intergenerational;
  • Helping congregations understand they don't have to have young children in their congregation to DO children's ministries;
  • Updating recommendations/bibliography on children's ministry books, resources and curricula;
  • Consulting in all things related to families and children with local congregations and regions/conferences/districts.

Represent the denominations:

  • at Ecumenical Events;
  • at the National Council of Churches Committee on Children and Families.
 

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College degree in education or a related field or equivalent experience or a combination of academic study and experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of the scope, vision and theologies of the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Willingness and ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups
  • Ability to implement short and long range goals
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage budgets
  • Leadership development skills
  • Ability to travel frequently
  • Skilled in group process
  • Knowledge of child and family development and knowledge of systems that impact development
  • Familiarity and continuing interest in the developing ecumenical and secular family ministry models
  • Ability and skill in designing organizational models and developing supporting resources for family and children's ministry
  • Knowledge and abilities in childhood faith formation and education, Christian faith formation and education, and family life formation and education
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission
  • Computer competency with experience in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Computer and other technological competency for telecommuting, with experience using programs such as Skype, WebEx, or ooVoo for meetings and program coordination
  • Experience with social media and website editing

OTHER:

  • This is a part-time position (55% of the time) with standard UCC benefits.
  • Regular office hours and location of positions will be determined by Search Committee and successful candidates. This position does not need to be based in Cleveland or Indianapolis.
  • This team position will require extensive travel and numerous weekends and evenings in addition to the regular work hours.
