Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Minister for Refugee and Migration Services develops and coordinates theologically grounded strategies, initiatives, and programmatic resources related to the comprehensive NMUCC’s Refugee and Migration Ministries program. This position focuses on supporting local church engagement with activities that support migrant, immigrant, refugee, and asylee communities. This position engages with a variety of partners across, and outside, the UCC to ensure strategic collaboration that addresses the shifting needs of migrant, immigrant, refugee and asylee communities through collective social action. This position will work across the following areas:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Resettlement and Newcomer Accompaniment
    • Support UCC congregations, Conferences and other UCC ministries in connecting and collaborating with local refugee resettlement offices of Church World Service (CWS) and national resettlement networks.
    • Conceptualize and develop plans to increase UCC capacity for migration services including refugee resettlement, asylum seeker support, and advocacy guided by the goals and strategies of the UCC.
    • Work with UCC congregations and ecumenical partners around community sponsorship for newly arriving refugees to be resettled and for accompaniment of asylum seekers.
  • Resource Development, Education and Advocacy
    • Curate worship materials and facilitate theological discernment dialogue to interpret the UCC’s Refugee and Migration Ministries program across its various settings, strengthening its voice and engagement through speaking engagements, articles, workshop leadership, and correspondence.
    • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of government immigration and refugee resettlement policies and procedures to support and advocate on behalf of migrant, immigrant, refugee and asylee populations.
    • In collaboration with the Global HOPE Minister and Team Leader, engage and educate congregations about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to refugees and migrants.
  • Issued-Related UCC Networks
    • Lead the UCC’s network of Immigrant Welcoming Congregations and resource the discernment process of congregations interested in becoming an Immigrant Welcoming Congregation.
    • Support the Minister for Immigration Justice’s leadership of the National Collaborative on Immigration – a network of UCC members active in immigration policy advocacy.
    • Collaborate with the Minister for Immigration Justice to strengthen and expand networks of UCC congregations engaging in refugee, migrant, asylum, and resettlement ministries.
  • NMUCC Coordination and Collaboration
    • Collaborate for programming, resource development, network building, communication and advocacy at points of intersection with the work of Global Relations Ministers in Global Ministries, the Washington, D.C. office, the United Nations office, and other related national ministries programs.
    • Participate in the Migration, Immigration, Refugee and Asylee (MIRA) working table to coordinate NMUCC’s strategy, approach and response to MIRA advocacy and program implementation.
    • Work collaboratively with Global HOPE Team members at points of intersection, including with the Minister for Disaster Response and Recovery on displacement issues and with the Team Leader on sustainability issues stemming from war, poverty, and climate change.
  • Ecumenical Coordination and Collaboration
    • In partnership with the Minister and Team Leader for the Global HOPE office, maintain programmatic relationships with appropriate Church World Service offices and staff, including Faith Solidarity working group, and the offices and staff of other faith-based and non-governmental organizations related to the work of refugee and migration services.
  • Grant Administration
    • In consultation with the Global HOPE Team Leader, develop grant applications and requests for proposals for the distribution of refugee and migration grant funds to support congregations, Conferences, and partners.
    • Participate in Global HOPE team grant review meetings to provide input for assessing grant applications supporting local initiatives accompanying refugees, asylees, and migrants.
    • Work with the Global HOPE team to monitor and track outcomes and stories connected to granted funds.

 

  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A master’s degree in a related field, or a combination of education and demonstrated work experience.
  • A theological understanding of global mission in its broad range of concerns; a person of faith familiar with the United Church of Christ and its core values.
  • Knowledge and experience working with migration services, with an understanding of the issues and methodologies for creating systemic change.
  • Demonstrated intercultural competencies with ability to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious settings.
  • Demonstrated capability to communicate through a variety of methods, including preaching and writing for newsletters.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently and confidentially.
  • Demonstrated use of social media and related technologies.
  • Ability to travel within the United States and its territories.

OTHER

  • The position is based in Cleveland and requires work in the office at least 3 days/week.
