This position supports both the Specialized Orthopedic and Development Rehab (SODR) unit (0.5 FTE) and the Day Program (0.5 FTE).

Specialized Orthopedic and Development Rehab (SODR) unit cares for children with mobility and movement impairments related to the musculoskeletal system. While in hospital, clients have access to a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, child and youth workers, social workers, therapeutic recreation specialists and other team members. The team works together to provide patients and families with the best possible quality care. Discover more about the unit here.

The Day Program at Holland Bloorview provides medical monitoring by qualified staff and allows clients to continue their in-hospital therapies, attend school and return home to their families in the evenings. Clients and families can use the program to transition home after a long hospital stay or as an alternative to staying at the hospital. Learn more about the program here

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides client and family-centred care, which is goal directed, evidence based and outcome oriented
  • Respects the client/family’s rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences
  • Bases practice on direction provided by the Speech-Language Pathologist and in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Carries out the Speech-Language Pathology designated programs to individual clients or groups of clients who are being seen for augmentative and alternative communication and documents client progress
  • Provides education to clients, caregivers and other professionals under direct supervision by the Speech-Language Pathologist
  • Develops materials for use with individual clients.
  • Participates in on-the-job training and continuing education/professional development where appropriate
  • Documents accurate workload statistics
  • Collects relevant data as directed by the Speech-Language Pathologist
  • Maintains clean, safe equipment and materials and assists in reviewing inventory
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings
  • Communicates in a timely and effective manner with team members and clients
  • Provides client/caregiver training, follow-up and equipment preparation under the supervision of the primary clinician
  • Identifies practice issues and participates in their resolution with the clinical staff
  • Adheres to Centre/professional charting guidelines
  • Utilizes research information to support evidence based practice
  • Actively engages in clinical supervision of students in Communicative Disorders Assistant programs
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Communicative Disorders Assistant program
  • Previous job-related experience required (or practicum experience for new graduates)
  • Experience working with children with physical and developmental disabilities preferred
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary setting is preferred
  • Familiarity and experience with Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems, specialized hardware and software preferred
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, verbal, written and interpersonal skills
  • Self directed learner who demonstrates initiative
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities
  • Knowledge of speech, language and communication strategies for intervention and training
  • Ability to modify delivery of program activities based on client’s interest and abilities
