Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The United Church of Christ, National Ministries seeks a Minister for Board and Council Relations to support governing body and council relations in consultation with the General Counsel’s office and reporting to the General Minister and President/CEO. This position supports the United Church of Christ Board and the Church Building & Loan Fund Board of Directors. The Minister for Board and Council Relations will also serve as the primary liaison to UCC colleges, universities, and seminaries; and maintain relationships with the Council for American Indian Ministry, Council for Higher Education, Council for Racial and Ethnic Ministries (COREM), a ministry of racial and ethnic groups of the United Church of Christ; Council for Theological Education, Council for Youth and Young Adult Ministries, and Historical Council.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage calendar of board and board committee meetings in consultation with designated staff
  • Coordinate timely preparation, pre- and post-meeting delivery of board and committee meeting documents (agendas, reports, minutes, etc.) in consultation with designated staff.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for board members’ questions/concerns; continuously monitoring rosters/committee rosters to ensure they are up to date.
  • Conduct evaluations of board meetings and member experience on a per meeting basis and provide reports to the designated recipient.
  • Request, collect, and follow up on board member Conflict of Interest and Abuse Prevention disclosures annually
  • Manage board member expense reports
  • Assist with board member travel arrangements as required
  • Monitor and manage board budgets
  • Provide Board Effect/Concur orientation and training to board members
  • Serve as staff to the General Synod Nominating Committee (GSNC), and follow through on the work of ensuring the skill sets needed on the UCCB are passed on GSNC from the GMP/CEO.
  • Work closely with the GMP/CEO and the Chief Divisional Operations Office (CB&LF) to ensure skills sets needed on the CB&LF and ARC Boards are met.
  • Serve as primary staff person to the UCCB’s Board Development Committee
  • Work with our Research Team to prepare a survey of past UCCB members to determine how the UCCB experience can be shaped to support future recruitment of its members.
  • Develop and conduct exit interviews for Board members at the end of their term and those who leave early
  • Draft articles on board work for chair/GMP review and publication by MarCom
  • Serve as point of first contact for specified councils
  • Organize meetings for councils at the request of the General Minister & President
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A college degree, or equivalent, or a combination of academic study and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with non-profit governance or board relations
  • Commitment to and theological understanding of mission in its broad range of concerns;
  • ability to articulate and witness to one’s faith perspective.
  • Understanding of the polity and structures of the United Church of Christ.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and demonstrated excellent people skills.
  • Organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to take direction and follow through on commitments
  • Self-starter and movement builder capable of collaborative growth
  • Desire and sensitivity to working in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.

OTHER:

  • This position is based in Cleveland, OH and requires at least 3 days of work in the office
  • Some evening and weekend work will be required
