Position Summary:

The House of Ruth Maryland Domestic (HRM) Violence Legal Clinic (the Clinic) provides free legal services to survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) in order to help them gain safety and independence from their abusive partners.  The Staff Attorney – Family Law advises and represents survivors of IPV in family law proceedings in various jurisdictions, including, but not limited to Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, and Anne Arundel County, as well as in related civil proceedings, including protective order cases. The Clinic seeks applicants who are passionate about ending IPV, is interested in public interest law, and has at least two years’ experience practicing family law or equivalent litigation experience. House of Ruth provides additional training and mentorship on working with survivors of intimate partner violence and family law practice.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality, trauma-informed representation to survivors of intimate partner violence in protective order and family law cases, including divorce, custody, child support, alimony, division of marital property.
  • Conduct comprehensive consultations with potential clients, which include a thorough interview about recent and past incidents of abuse, safety planning, lethality assessment, and referrals to appropriate community and legal resources.
  • Provide prompt, compassionate services to clients.
  • Maintain the Clinic’s client database and systems used for tracking clients’ cases.

Pay: $71,135 - $80,000

 

Experience, Education, Certifications/Licenses

  • J.D. from accredited law school
  • Admitted to practice and in good standing with the Bar of Maryland
  • At least two years of experience practicing family law or equivalent litigation experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to ending domestic violence
  • Successful background check
