  1. ROLE

The Violence Against Women/Intimate Partner Violence Counsellor provides counselling services to Francophone and Anglophone abused women and participates in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of counselling services.

 
Position Requirements
  1. Education
    • Master’s degree from a recognized university Social Work or in a relevant acceptable discipline.
    • Eligible for membership in an appropriate professional regulatory body (Ontario College of Social Workers & Social Service Workers or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario).
  1. Professional experience
    • Three to five years full-time relevant experience in a community setting.
    • Familiarity with community development approaches to social work practice.
    • Experience in providing community-based mental health and counselling services including crisis intervention, group work, referral, and advocacy, to victims of assault.
    • Experience with counselling techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy, narrative therapy, feminist therapy, motivational interviewing or solution-focused therapy and strength-based practices preferred.
    • Thorough knowledge and understanding of resources in the francophone community and the francophone service provider network.
    • Experience in group education and knowledge of adult learning principles and experience in facilitating groups.
    • Experience and interest in working with marginalized and diverse clientele, such as low-income, high-needs, newcomer, and a variety of multicultural communities.
    • Experience in health promotion, including community development.
    • Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
    • Experience in a non-profit, community-based organization.
  1. Key Competencies
    • Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in current assessment and intervention techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of community resources and community-based health care, as well as issues affecting women and people affected by mental illness.
  • Ability to deal effectively with crisis situations
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with group dynamics and group facilitation approaches
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client service setting.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Program-Related Activities

  • Provides strength based and trauma-focused counselling within a feminist framework to abused women (francophone and Anglophone) to enhance the client's capacity to reach their goals for an improved quality of life.
  • Provides crisis counselling and support to abused women.
  • Ensures the development of and facilitates or co-facilitates groups for target populations, as necessary.
  • Co-leads support groups for francophone and Anglophone abused women.
  • Participates in group planning, interviewing of potential group members, and providing follow-up support to group members.
  • Provides risk assessment, personal and practical support, information, referral and advocacy with individuals. Assesses client status by gaining an understanding of social determinants of health.
  • Advocates for accessible community supports and services for francophone and Anglophone clients
  • Acts as a client advocate on individual and systemic issues.
  • Provides letters of support and therapeutic session summaries, for clients as requested
  • Contributes to chart documentation, participates in chart reviews and case conferences, and makes referrals.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of treatment, education, counselling and health promotion programs and services for individuals, families and the community.
  • Acts as a consultant on resources for other service providers in the Centre and in the community; compiles relevant information and facilitates access to those resources.
  • Liaises and collaborates with staff and other community service providers and resources as appropriate to provide service and make referrals.
  • Participates in preparation of funding proposals for new CCHC programs for francophone and Anglophone abused women.
  • Ensures accountability by providing statistics and reports of activities, as required, and keeps client records, as required, within the safeguard of confidentiality.
  • Participates in the selection, orientation and supervision of volunteers as applies to program related activities.
  • Participates in the selection, orientation, training and all aspects of supervision of students in practicum placements as required.
  • Works closely with Transitional Housing Support Worker

2.    Team Related Activities

  • Advises and participates in development of CCHC policies concerning issues related to family violence.
  • Works as a member of the team and participates in staff development opportunities.
  • Participates in team and staff meetings, and other Centre committees and activities as appropriate.
  • Performs any additional tasks and duties as assigned by the Manager.

3.    Networking Activities

  • Collaborates with colleagues and residents on projects to enhance the quality-of-life people in the CCHC service area.
  • Engages with service providers and clients in the francophone and Anglophone community to identify needs of francophone and Anglophone abused women, in Central/West Ottawa. Develop relevant programs and assist in integrating French-language services into the CCHC mandate
  • Maintains liaisons with CHCs and other programs in the City of Ottawa.
  • Participates in the francophone and Anglophone service network for abused women.
  • Establishes and maintains links and develop partnerships with other resources.
  • Engages in outreach activities to enhance awareness of the Centre's activities to the francophone and Anglophone community and to provide public education and outreach.
  • Assists in locating and accessing required community resources by liaising with community groups and other health/social service agencies to provide referral information and advocacy.
  • Ensures intra-agency communication by attending both appropriate team, agency and community meetings and preparing reports as needed.

Salary Range $35.03 - $41.21 per hour
