Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. SHC is a San Francisco Archdiocesan High School that is cosponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, District of San Francisco New Orleans and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

POSITION TITLE: Learning Specialist
SUPERVISED BY: Assistant Principal for Academics
FLSA STATUS: Exempt or Non-Exempt depending on status
EFFECTIVE DATE: July 1, 2025
COMPENSATION: $69,626 - $109,376 per year

Position Summary
The Learning Specialist works collaboratively with the Academic Resource Program Director to support SHC students with documented learning differences by working with students in small groups and individually to develop study skills and self-advocacy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Model the characteristics of a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic educator;

  • Promote SHC’s mission, philosophy and Integral Student Outcomes;

  • Collaborate with the Director and the Coordinator of ARS in providing Resource Center services;

  • Serve as academic tutor and executive functioning coach in ARS space for small group and individual instruction;

  • Develop student’s ability to self-advocate for access and utilization of reasonable accommodations as necessary;

  • Guide students in understanding how they learn and in devising strategies to cope with their learning profiles;

  • Serve as the leader teacher for an Academic Support Classes, including summer class;

  • Create strategies for student academic success and, in collaboration with Director, communicate strategies with teachers and families;

  • Connect students with faculty and peer tutors for additional academic support;

  • Collaborate with the Director to coordinate with educational therapists, tutors, and other outside resources to support student;

  • Regularly check grades for students with Learning Plans and take initiative to support students accordingly;

  • Facilitate and proctor extended time final exams;

  • Work with the Director in creating workshops for parents on how to support their students as well as professional learning opportunities for teachers and staff;

  • Create and regularly update resources for study skills on a Schoology page;

  • Collaborate in the school’s cocurricular activities, service learning, and retreat programs;

  • Engage in professional development, especially our four-year New Faculty Professional Development and Support Program, becoming a reflective and growth-minded practitioner who integrates best and next teaching practices rooted in the SHC mission;

  • Actively participate in SHC’s strategic initiatives to strengthen meaningful diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging practices, especially strategies to support equitable learning, culturally responsive teaching, social emotional learning, and universal design for learning;

  • Strengthen the mission of SHC and the charisms of the Daughters of Charity and De La Salle Christian Brothers and Department of Catholic Schools through their formational programs.

 
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree;

  • Credential in Special Education or Educational Therapy Certification;

  • Demonstrated skills in communication, organization, and teamwork;

  • Experience facilitating learning for students with learning differences;

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters Degree;

  • Experience coaching students in developing skills of executive functioning;

  • Classroom teaching experience;

  • Flexible, detail-oriented and self-motivated work habits.

Certifications and/or Licensure
Credential in Special Education preferred

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree; Master's Degree preferred (in-progress acceptable)

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft software applications, Google Suite; databases (such as a learning management system) and internet usage.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be present in front of students for long lengths of time; to be able to handle or feel as well as be able to communicate.
