POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Horticulturist position works with the City Horticulturist to plan and maintain landscape and container plantings and manage invasive species and agronomic weeds throughout VPA parks and properties, including along the St. Joseph River. The Assistant Horticulturist works with ornamental annual and perennial woody and herbaceous plants and Indiana native species. The Horticulturist may be asked to participate in City-sponsored events, including educational presentations, guided park tours, volunteer group activities, and career fair tables. The Horticulturist may perform other duties as assigned. Reports to City Horticulturist.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Not a Supervisory role. May be asked to lead volunteer groups or guide seasonal employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.

· Weed landscape beds and native plantings, including natural areas

· Commercial herbicide application

· Fertilize container and in-ground beds

· Prune landscape shrubs and small woody plants as needed

· Mulch landscape beds

· Regular watering of container plants; supplemental watering of un-irrigated landscape beds

· Care of propagation/nursery stock grown onsite

· Leaf blowing and removal, as necessary

· Trash clean up, as necessary

· Keep records of daily work logs

· Assist with holiday décor

· Maintain hand tools and equipment

· Weed eating and brush cutting, as necessary

· Maintain a positive attitude with the public

· Safely drive City truck to and from worksites

· Learn new landscape procedures and best practices

NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as assigned.

Engagement with volunteer and educational groups

 
Position Requirements

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

· Horticulture/Ecology/Natural Resource Management degree preferred.

· High School Diploma or equivalent required.

· Two to Three years of experience in grounds maintenance and plant care, emphasizing weed identification.

· Ideal candidate familiar with native and invasive plant species identification.

· Experience with commercial chemical application preferred.

· Plant propagation experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in grounds maintenance.

· Ability to frequently work independently and to complete activities according to work schedule.

· Ability to lift heavy objects, walk, crouch, climb ladders, and stand for long periods of time, and to perform physical labor.

· Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

· Ability to establish effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, and the public.

· Ability to work near water’s edge.

· Ability to care for ornamental and native plants.

· Ability to program irrigation equipment.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION:

· Valid Driver’s license required.

· Registered Technician pesticide applicator’s license required within 12 months of hiring.

EQUIPMENT:

Hand-held brush cutter, backpack and hand-held sprayer, weed whacker, backpack blower, pickup truck, shovel, broom, rake, wheelbarrow, ladders, computer, cell phone, iPad, hoses, quick connects, hand tools: pruners, shears, loppers, soil knife, rice knife.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, talk, and listen to instructions. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle and feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required in this job include the ability to identify small objects and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be comfortable navigating steep, sloping, and sometimes difficult terrain while carrying essential tools. The employee will be required to operate leaf blowers and backpack sprayers up to 50 pounds. This position will require the use of ladders to access some sites and assist with holiday décor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, sharp tools, busy city streets, and riverbanks. The employee may encounter irritants such as pesticides, gasoline, poison ivy, thistle, and thorns. Reasonable accommodation will be made to avoid such areas and/or provide personal protective equipment. Noise levels are moderate when not using equipment and/or working near busy streets.
