Summary/Objective:

The Assistant Manager, Academy Museum Store, will assist in the training and development of our retail associates along with managing the daily operations of the store. You will help coach, monitor, and appraise retail staff to provide first-class retail services to visitors while encouraging enthusiasm for and knowledge about exhibitions and items in the collection. A key aspect of this role is to take ownership of programming the store space, including organizing and executing events such as book signings, product launches, and other in-store activations.

 

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Academy Museum Store, ensuring the store runs efficiently and aligns with established protocols and policies.
    • Open and close the store, ensuring all operational procedures are followed, including cash handling and security protocols.
    • Coordinate daily store briefings with the Retail team, updating staff on product knowledge, sales targets, and operational priorities.
    • Assist in maintaining the store's visual merchandising standards and help implement merchandising strategies aligned with the store's sales goals and brand standards.
    • Contribute to meeting and exceeding sales goals by helping the team drive customer conversions and promoting products effectively.
    • Monitor and track daily sales performance, reporting key metrics to the Store Manager and making necessary adjustments to staffing or operational processes to meet targets.
    • Work with the Store Manager to develop and implement sales strategies that enhance customer loyalty and improve repeat business.
    • Lead by example in delivering exceptional customer service, ensuring each guest has a memorable shopping experience.
    • Address customer concerns and resolve service-related issues in a professional and timely manner.
    • Collaborate with the Store Manager to create and execute programming and promotional activities to drive foot traffic and increase customer engagement.
    • Ensure effective communication between the Retail team and other departments (Inventory, E-Commerce, Visitor Services, etc.) to maintain smooth operations.
    • Report operational concerns and updates to the Store Manager and work closely with other museum departments to address any issues that arise.
  • Support the Store Manager and Inventory team to ensure adequate stock levels and efficient inventory practices. Help oversee the receiving process and minimize shrinkage.
    • Play a role in managing merchandise inventories, ensuring accurate stock counts, and leading the team in inventory-related tasks.
  • Supervise and support the Retail team, ensuring that all team members understand their responsibilities and deliver high-quality customer service.
    • Work closely with the Store Manager to provide coaching, feedback, and development opportunities to Retail team members.
    • Coordinate staff training sessions and ensure all employees are fully trained in security, product knowledge, and customer engagement techniques.
    • Foster a positive, collaborative, and inclusive team environment that promotes professional growth and performance excellence.
  • Take full ownership of programming the store space, including organizing and executing events such as book signings, product launches, and other retail activations that align with the Academy Museum’s mission and brand.
    • Collaborate with authors, artists, and other external partners to coordinate in-store events that engage visitors and enhance the museum’s retail experience.
    • Develop and implement creative promotional strategies for events to increase foot traffic and sales.
    • Work with the Marketing and PR teams to ensure the promotion of in-store events and activations through various channels.
  • Support and participate in off-site retail events, such as pop-up shops, to promote the Academy Museum’s retail presence in Los Angeles and other areas.
    • Work closely with the Store Manager and cross-functional teams to ensure the success of off-site retail initiatives.
  • Assist with other duties and special projects as required by the Store Manager, contributing to the overall success of the store.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the Lead, Academy Museum Store and Retail Associates, Academy Museum Store.

 

Required Competencies:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of retail business experience.
  • 1+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience in a successful high-end, specialty store and experience-focused retail.
  • Experience providing feedback and encouraging excellent sales performance.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Customer-centric approach with knowledge of filmmaking and fan of movies.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, holidays, and weekends.

 

Preferred Qualifications (if applicable):

  • Experience with Teamwork POS system is a plus.

 

Physical Demands

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • Move around, bend, and reach.
  • Move and transport usually up to 25 pounds.

 

Work Environment:

  • Inside
  • Noise levels is dependent on crowds, music playing throughout the museum

 

Travel: Percentage of travel time expected for the position is 5%. The Assistant Manager may need to travel to pop-up locations or to the Jefferson warehouse.

Compensation: The expected salary for this role is $68,000.00. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.)
