Koniag Services, Inc. is looking for an experienced Mainframe Automated Cartridge System Administrator to join our team in the Durham, NC area. Be a part of a joint government/contractor team supporting every citizen of the United States. The client is responsible for managing and supporting the Data Storage resources for their production and test environments.  The Mainframe Data Assurance Branch (MDAB) maintains and operates the mainframe Automated Cartridge Systems (ACS), performs media management tasks, manages the offsite storage vaulting process and provides tape support for disaster recovery testing and events. 

The candidate will provide Mainframe ACS support for the client’s production and test environments; to include maintaining ACS operations; creating new or modifying existing ACS environments; problem management and production support and conducting software installations and maintenance. 

This position is Wednesday-Sunday 12am to 8:30am (to include a ½ hour non-billable meal break). The position will rotate a monthly “On call 24/7 status"; This is a five way rotation.

Duties and Responsibilities-

Maintain ACS operations:

Migrate tape datasets from older media types to new technology

Direct datasets to the appropriate device and media types using the HSC/SMC software

Maintain media scratch sub-pools

Create and maintain real time tape stacking environments

Coordinate media requirements with users

Maintain the Tape Management Catalog (TMC)

Support and maintain the tape vaulting process and offsite storage activities

Manage and maintain the Oracle SL8500, VSM and EMC DLm subsystems

Maintain the KMS Tape encryption platforms

Prepare reports on a daily basis for managing scratch pools, tape errors and media utilization

Analyze SMF data and provide performance tuning


Create new or modifying existing ACS environments:

Conduct research on state-of-the-art technology

Participate in feasibility studies

Assist in testing and implementing new hardware and software configurations

Communicate and work with other components and end users to ensure all resources are identified and defined appropriately

Document changes using the client’s ticketing system


Problem management and production support:

Provide problem resolution services including the diagnosis and root cause analysis of ACS configuration or storage management problems.  The analysis should include the ability to research and interpret error codes and related information, media usage and device allocation issues. Background and knowledge of IBM z/OS, HSC/SMC and CA-1 utilities is essential

Provide 24x7 pager support to resolve related problems when they occur (rotational)

Inform the designated client personnel by phone and email of problems and subsequent resolutions; Systems problems and operational issues will be worked on until the problem is resolved, even if it requires staying extended periods of time or outside normal business hours

Conduct software installations and maintenance:

Install and maintain associated vendor software products for managing the TMC, ACS libraries, ICF catalog environments and tape stacking activities, primarily using System Modification Product/Extended (SMP/E)

Provide 24x7 pager support to resolve ACS software related problems when they occur (rotational)

Update configuration documentation reflecting new software versions

Research compatibility between z/OS operating Systems software and third party vendor software, hardware products and application software

Establish and document test plans

Coordinate test activities with application development staff and external partners when necessary and directed by the client

Position Requirements

The candidate must have 4 to 6 years of ACS experience

Required skills-

The candidate must have experience with ACS operations, HSC/SMC and CA-1 utilities, IBM z/OS.  It is preferred that the candidate have experience with Oracle StorageTek SL8500 tape silos, high capacity/performance 9840x and T10000x tape drives with associated media, and Virtual Storage Managers and Key Management Systems (KMS).
