An employee in this class is responsible for the supervision of all activities of a specialised field of Medical Laboratory Technology. Work involves supervision and training of laboratory staff and providing technical assistance as may be required. Work is performed with considerable independence under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager who reviews work through inspections, reports and general observations.
The Authority reserves the right to assign the officer to any Facility under its management.

Responsible for the day-to-day management of the relevant section taking appropriate action in the case of incidents which threaten the health and safety of staff or the quality of specimens.

Supervises all activities in a specialised field of Medical Laboratory Technology including Immunology, Haematology, Immunohaematology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Histopathology, and Cytopathology.

Performs complex testing of the relevant Section area.

Responsible for validating Section reports.

Evaluates outcomes of investigations and takes appropriate action in relation to anomalous or poor quality results or insufficient information.

Collates and interprets findings and outcomes and reports them to relevant clinical colleagues, stating any limitations.

Interprets, prepares and distributes statistical data and reports regarding Laboratory Services for their section within the Region to include equipment utilisation and maintenance.

Prepares laboratory reports, annual reports and annual budget estimates for the Section.

Supervises and trains Laboratory staff in the principles, procedures, methods, techniques and practices of Medical Laboratory Technology.

Prepares indents, reports and advises on the purchase of reagents, consumables and equipment and generates the purchase requisition to the Laboratory Manager for the relevant Section.

Performs administrative duties such as recommending vacation leave, granting time-off and preparing rosters for shift duties and vacation leave.

Responsible for telephoning the critical values to clinicians/nurses.

Responsible for the effective use of resources.

Attends seminars, meetings, training sessions both locally and abroad and assists with lecturers and demonstrations.

Prepares proposals for equipment and positions, for Laboratory Services and participates in employment interviews.

Conducts research projects.

Supervises Medical Laboratory interns from recognised training programs and submits grades on completion of their attachment.

Ability to perform duties according to assigned rosters or plans that can be formulated in times of authorized service exigencies.

Ability to use the relevant computer applications related to job functions.

Performs any other related duties as may be assigned by the Authority.
