Job Summary:
The Bereavement Counsellor will be responsible for providing social psychological support to all bereaved relatives on a day to day basis. The work will include individual and group counselling within the respective cultural/religious belief system; assisting with staff interpersonal relationship skills development and organizing funerals for unclaimed corpses. The Bereavement Counsellor will be required to liaise closely with the Mortuary Coordinator, ward staff and relatives.
The Authority reserves the right to assign the officer to any Facility under its management.
The core functions include but not limited to the following:
- Provides counselling to bereaved family members.
- Gives emotional and psychological support to bereaved parents at the death of their infant.
- Ensures that religious/cultural requirements of clients are observed as far as possible.
- Provides verbal and written information to bereaved relatives – brochures, handouts, talk shop, etc.
- Organizes with Coordinator for funerals of unclaimed corpses, both infants and adults.
- Makes arrangements with Family Counselling Services for more formal counselling for relatives if necessary.
- Introduces and maintains a support group, particularly for parents whose newborn infants have died.
- Contact and direct relatives to the relevant departments on request for Hospital’s burial of deceased.
- In conjunction with Coordinator, continually improve the quality of service offered to clients.
- Liaise with the wards to offer support and counselling to newly bereaved relatives, particularly in Obstetrics.
- Regularly update Mortuary Attendants in their interactions with clients.
- Work within all Health and Safety Requirements, ensuring minimal risks at all times.
- Attend all mandatory training requirements to seek professional development opportunities.
- Attend regular meetings with team members.
- Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times.
- Undertake investigations of complaints if required and report accordingly.

Ability to perform duties according to assigned rosters or plans that can be formulated in times of authorized service exigencies.
