Internship purpose: This position will provide an opportunity to work closely with the commercial lending team of a Madison based publicly traded commercial bank, including working with a team of credit analysts, commercial lenders and business development officers, and senior credit managers. The intern will specifically gain insight into the commercial real estate side of commercial banking, through core responsibilities and special projects.
Hours & Schedule: The position is available to start immediately. We are looking for preferably a Senior, graduating in May or August, but a Junior would also be acceptable. The work schedule will be approximately 15-20 hours per week during the school year and 40 hours per week during the summer, should that be applicable. Flexibility of working hours during the school year will be available.
Specifically, as a Commercial Real Estate Credit Analyst Intern you’ll:
Stress test segments of the Bank’s commercial real estate loan portfolio. This project is prepared annually by the Bank and involves monitoring the Bank’s income producing non-owner occupied real estate and stress testing current cash flow on properties by increasing interest rates, increasing vacancy, etc. to assess the Bank’s current risk.
Review and evaluate real estate appraisals received by Bank.
Input financial statement data into company software and analyze to determine the credit worthiness of existing and prospective commercial clients.
Prepare Cash Flow worksheets to demonstrate borrower’s ability to repay loans.
Gain exposure to the commercial loan approval process by completing credit presentations and memos (which are used to approve new loans, renew existing loans, or report losses and/or covenant violations) for Loan Committee. Also have an opportunity to occasionally attend loan committee meetings.
Develop a working knowledge of loan policy and gain the ability to communicate its interpretation and rationale to other bank employees.
- Pursuing a degree in Real Estate and/or Finance or Accounting
- Preferably completing their Senior year, graduating May or August 2013; or a Junior graduating May 2014
- Desire to pursue a career in commercial banking, financial services, or commercial real estate preferred
- Prior related experience a plus, but not required
- Strong technology proficiency (strong skills in Excel a plus)
- Ability to work independently and use independent judgment with minimal supervision
- Above average communication skills, both verbal and written
- Strong attention to detail, problem solving skills, and ability to prioritize work to meet numerous levels of deadlines
