This is a one year position beginning January 2, 2013 to December 31, 2013

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION: To assist the United Church of Christ in all its settings to understand health/health-related issues, health care, and wellness as issues of social and economic justice.  The Program Associate for Health Care Justice will assume oversight for essential functions and responsibilities of the Health Care Justice portfolio for one year on a part-time basis.  The schedule is flexible but may require some evenings and weekends.  In addition some travel is required.  The Program Associate for Health Care Justice will be responsible for taking a key role in conceptualizing, planning, and developing resources and educational materials/workshops/training that will enable UCC churches to identify and understand the emerging and unresolved local, state, national and global health issues.  The Program Associate will provide logistics support to selected UCC ministries and draft key communications for diverse UCC audiences on health and health care issues


  • Maintains connections with U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services staff in the Let’s Move initiative.  Continue to work on this initiative as an active partner with Faith United Against Childhood Obesity and Let’s Move Faith and Community Partnerships
  • Serve as Liaison and provide leadership to the UCC Faith Community Nurse Network.
    - host monthly meetings with faith community nurse leadership team
    - assists with planning and goal setting for the year
    - provide planning and provisions for General Synod in Long Beach
    - maintain webpage and updating nurse directory
    - maintain manual
    - plan webinars
    - coordinate integration with parish nurse in the building
    - other duties as needed
  • Serves as active member on Faithful Reform in Health Care (coalition of faith denominations):
    - attend monthly conference calls
    - participates in ecumenical and interfaith planning on health care reform and other  activities related to
    - health care reform. 
    - attend Ecumenical Advocacy Days in Washington, DC in February.
  • Assist is program design
    - participates on the Washington Interreligious Staff Community – Health Care Working   Group monthly calls
    - write updates on health care national policy and other health-related issues to keep UCC    constituents abreast trends, etc.
  • Serves as active member of JWM staff
    - travel to required meetings and General Synod
    - provide support to constituents, as needed, on health issues. 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • Bachelor’s degree or its professional equivalent in a health-related or social work discipline or a combination of academic study and equivalent experience. Graduate degree preferred.


  • Some knowledge of faith and health connections and knowledge around health, health care and health promotion.


  • Ability and desire to work and function effectively as part of a team as well as independently.


  • Knowledge and appreciation of the United Church of Christ and its polity.


  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with persons from diverse backgrounds and cultures.


  • An embracing of the vision of a multicultural, multiracial, open and affirming, accessible to all church.


  • Evidence of being a self-starter, able to prioritize work and perform with minimum supervision in the areas of planning, organizing, coordinating and making decisions and judgments relating to assigned projects and other responsibilities.  


  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook, and electronic communications including Web site management.


  • Ability and willingness to travel within the United States as required.
