Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Chief Administrative Officer of the United Church of Christ who may be a lay person, an ordained minister, or a person with ordained ministerial partner standing, shall provide visionary leadership as a member of the senior staff.   In particular, the Chief Administrative Officer is the operational executive for the National Setting and works with the Board of Directors of the Common Services Corporation and the United Church Board.  The Chief Administrative Officer is accountable to the General Minister and President.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serves as Corporate Secretary of the United Church of Christ Board, each of the covenanted ministries, the Common Services Corporation and all other corporations within the National Setting.

 

  • Testifies to the history, theological identity, and witness of the United Church of Christ.  

 

  • Bears responsibility for coordinating the internal life and work of the Office of the General Minister and President as operational executive of this office.

 

  • On behalf of the General Minister and President, the Chief Administrative Officer provides supervision of the Office of General Counsel.

 

  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors and staff members of the Common Services Corporation guides the efficient operation of the Corporation, carrying the responsibility of the coordination and supervision of the day-to-day operations of Information Systems, Meeting Services, Human Resources, Grants and Scholarships, Property & Insurance, Research Services, Governing Body Relations, Community Life and Assistant to the Collegium, Central Services, and the Archives.

 

  • In consultation with the General Minister and President, the Chief Administrative Officer gives oversight and supervision to the Publishing, Identity, and Communication and Financial Development Ministries.

 

  • On behalf of the 700 Prospect Corporation provides supervision of the day-to-day work of Building Services.

 

  • Consults with the Collegium on an ongoing basis, and serves as a member of the Mission Planning Council.

 

  • Is in charge of and is responsible for the planning, coordination of events, and arrangements for the General Synod in collaboration with the Collegium.   

 

  • Represents the UCC in a variety of settings.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • An advanced degree in business administration or a related field or equivalent experience, or a combination of academic study and experience.

 

  • Demonstrated evidence of strong organizational, leadership, and managerial skills.

 

  • Knowledge of and experience in marketing & communications, personnel, philanthropy, information technology.

 

  • Experience in a senior management position, an understanding of organizational management/systems theories, and the ability to manage staff and budget.

 

  • Has a proven record in the successful operation of multiple management functions.

 

  • Has broad experience in leadership settings of the United Church of Christ, including significant experience in the local church.

 

  • Exhibits the ability to see and act out of a whole-church perspective.

 

  • Experience and capacity to work in diverse settings and among diverse people in collegial, constructive, caring, and covenantal ways.

 

  • Position involves some travel.
