We support our more than 350 members with advocacy, policy development, research, education, and leadership development. Communities depend on essential hospitals for care across the continuum, health care workforce training, research, public health, and other services. Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Communications serves as a key leader directing the strategy and execution of communications activities, programs, and outreach on behalf of America’s Essential Hospitals and the Essential Hospitals Institute. The Director of Communication oversees a talented high-performing team that drives our associations’ innovative campaigns, messaging, and reputation with the goal of engaging and supporting the needs of our diverse membership.The Director of Communications oversees media relations and ensures consistent messaging and branding across all platforms for our mission-driven organization. The Director of Communications is an ideal position for an experienced visionary leader with a passion for storytelling and a track record of success.

The Director of Communications enjoys a hybrid schedule, coming to the office on Tuesdays and as needed for internal and external meetings, events, or projects. The projected salary range for the Director of Communications is $150,000-$170,000 per year. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES of the DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS*:

External Communications, Strategic Messaging, Media Relations

  • Develop and implement association’s communications and media relations strategies for external audiences, including members, policymakers, as well as internal stakeholders to raise the visibility of association advocacy, research, education, and other activities and accomplishments.
  • Work with the association’s executive leadership and legislative and policy teams to develop and refine strategic messaging for various audiences to best position the association to achieve its advocacy goals and avoid undesirable outcomes.
  • Cultivate relationships with trade and mainstream media to shape accurate and timely coverage of association perspectives and activity on issues related to essential hospitals, safety net care, and low-income and marginalized populations.
  • Write speeches for the association CEO and other executives.
  • Develop statements, news releases, talking points, informational flyers, and other collateral to support strategic communications goals.
  • Oversee development, design, and distribution of periodic newsletters, advocacy alerts, analyses, and other email member communications.
  • Develop, conduct, and evaluate advocacy messaging campaigns with paid, earned, and owned media.

Digital Assets, Editorial Design, and Brand & Style Management

  • Provide strategic direction for the content, structure, and functionality of various association and Institute digital assets, including websites, podcasts, and social media
  • Oversee the day-to-day development, maintenance, and growth of digital assets and their related technical support needs
  • Evaluate and leverage emerging technologies to position the association as a leader in digital communications
  • Oversee the editorial review, revision, and processing of documents, presentations, and other collateral for external and internal audiences.
  • In collaboration with internal customers, provide creative direction and production support for documents that require the services of an outside design professional.
  • Protect and promote the brands of the association and Institute by ensuring consistent and appropriate use of association trademarks, visual identity, and language.
  • Serve as an internal resource and subject matter expert on brand and style.

Communications Team Direction

  • Lead, develop, engage and mentor a team of professional staff, with varying levels of experience.
  • Direct communications team members, meeting with each regularly to assess project status and resource needs and ensure appropriate workload distribution
  • Develop and distribute internal communications to inform staff and promote association core values; transparency; and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Develop annual budgets to anticipate staffing needs, contractor and vendor support, and other resources to achieve communications goals.
  • Identify, evaluate, and select vendors consistent with association procurement policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the development and achievement of department goals for the annual association work plan.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS:

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in senior public affairs, communications, and/or public policy communications positions
  • A minimum of one year of experience leading a team in a supervisory capacity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications, or equivalent; master’s degree preferred.
  • A demonstrated high level of proficiency, and political/ health care acumen in communications skills, including:
    • Writing clearly and concisely about sometimes complex topics
    • Editing at all levels (developmental, line editing, copy editing, proofreading)
    • Developing communications strategies and positioning
    • Political and advocacy messaging
    • Media relations
    • Campaign development (paid, earned, and owned media)
    • Speech writing
    • Branding and image development
    • Publications production and management
    • Digital communications, including website and social media management
    • Public presentation
  • Project management experience
  • Experience developing and managing a budget
