Department: External Relations & Philanthropy

Reports To: Chief Philanthropy Officer

FLSA Status: Salary, Exempt

Pay: $60,000-$69,500/year

This position is a key part of the External Relations & Philanthropy team, focusing on securing private grants and fostering strong relationships with foundations. This role involves identifying and developing opportunities for grant acquisition and strategic partnership building. The individual in this position is responsible for researching potential grant opportunities, writing compelling proposals, and managing the grant application process from start to finish. Additionally, this role cultivates and maintains partnerships with foundation representatives to support Ignite’s mission and programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Grant Acquisition and Management:

  • Research and identify potential private grant opportunities aligned with Ignite’s mission and programs.
  • Develop and write compelling grant proposals, including narratives, budgets, and supporting materials for all corporate and foundation grant opportunities.
  • Secure private funding to meet the agency’s budget requirements and goals.
  • Manage the grant application process from submission to reporting, ensuring compliance with all requirements and deadlines.
  • Collaborate with program staff to gather necessary information and data for proposals and reports.
  • Prepare and submit timely and accurate grant reports to funders.
  • Maintain a centralized calendar of due dates and accurate records of grant activities, including proposals submitted, outcomes, and communications with funders.

Foundation Relations:

  • Develop and manage relationships with foundation representatives and key stakeholders, including developing a personal rapport, doing periodic check-ins, leading site visits, and sending timely, personal correspondence.
  • Develop and implement strategies for engaging with foundations to secure funding and build long-term partnerships.
  • Organize and conduct site visits, meetings, and presentations for foundation representatives.

Strategic Planning:

  • Contribute to the development and execution of the overall fundraising strategy, with a focus on private grants and foundation relations.
  • Monitor trends and best practices in grant seeking and foundation relations to ensure Ignite remains competitive and up-to-date.

Collaboration and Teamwork:

  • Work closely with the External Relations & Philanthropy team to align grant efforts with overall fundraising goals.
  • Collaborate with program staff to understand program needs and develop proposals that align with organizational priorities.
  • Participate in staff meetings, planning sessions, and other organizational activities.
 
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 2-year experience in grant writing, prospect research, general fundraising or comparable and transferable skills acquired in a professional setting
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and CRM donor management software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications/Journalism, Media, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.
  • Proven track record of securing significant grants from private funders.
  • Knowledge of Chicago’s philanthropic landscape.
