POSITION SUMMARY
Opus One Winery is looking for Harvest interns to join us for the 2024 Harvest. The Harvest Berry Sampling and Cellar Intern is a hybrid position that works closely with the vineyard, lab and cellar teams to perform all harvest berry sampling and cellar duties. Responsibilities include but are not limited to berry sampling for crop estimates and juice analysis, data entry, pressing, pump overs, barrel preparations, topping and sampling as needed. We strive to provide a safe, educational, and enjoyable work environment while learning the day-to-day operations within the cellar to reach absolute wine quality.
This is a temporary position anticipated to start on July 8th and is anticipated to last for approximately 5 months until December 6th, subject to harvest conditions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Berry Sampling Responsibilities will occur July to September
- Perform stem and leaf water potentials
- Count and collect cluster and berry samples for crop estimates
- Collect berry samples from various vineyard blocks
- Process berry samples in the laboratory
- Data entry using AgCode
- Perform basic analysis: berry weights, °Brix, use of OenoFoss
- Map vineyard blocks
- Other duties may be assigned
Cellar Responsibilities will occur from September to December
- Conduct pump overs and assist with additions
- Pressing
- Sanitation of tanks, equipment, etc.
- Barrel preparation and maintenance
- Topping and sampling as needed
- Fruit receival and sorting
- Bottling
- Maintain cellar cleanliness and organization
- Other duties may be assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess a High School diploma
- Desire to work in the cellar, vineyard and lab with a positive attitude, a willingness to learn and prioritize attention to detail. Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel preferred
- Individual must have an interest in winemaking and possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Opus One Winery
Physical ability to perform tasks that may require prolonged standing, sitting, lifting, and other activities necessary to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must be able to perform quality work, safely and consistently with minimum supervision or direction. Use proper safety equipment and safety procedures. Ability to comprehend the consequences of various problem situations and to refer them to the appropriate people for resolution.

Working Conditions/ Hazards:
Work is mainly performed in a Vineyard/Winery/Cellar/Lab and in the vineyards. The individual is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles relative to normal Cellar and Lab processes. Noise levels are usually moderate to loud. Occasionally works near moving machinery parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals.

Accident prevention is of utmost importance in all phases of job responsibilities.
- Follow all company policies and procedures including job safety, safety rules and regulations.
- Assist management to provide safe and healthy working conditions at all times.
- Immediately report all unsafe conditions, work-related accidents, and illnesses to the Safety Manager and your supervisor.

COMPENSATION: Base Compensation: $21.00 USD hourly
