About the Organization A pioneering not-for-profit affordable housing developer and community programs initiator in New York City, Settlement Housing Fund, Inc. has worked since 1969 to create more than 9,000 apartments through 73 affordable rental and homeownership development projects. Settlement Housing presently owns and maintains 50 buildings with more than 3,100 apartments throughout New York City, with concentrations of housing and services in the Mt. Eden and Fordham Heights sections of the Bronx, Crown Heights, Brooklyn, the Lower East Side, as well as other sites throughout Manhattan. The organization is working on a growing pipeline of new construction and preservation projects throughout the city, and expanding its Resident Engagement Services to meet the housing stability needs of households leaving shelter and other at-risk tenants.



Settlement Housing Fund is the parent organization of The Crenulated Company, LTD dba New Settlement which was created in 1989 with the acquisition of 14 abandoned buildings from the City of New York. New Settlement has evolved into a robust social service organization offering a range of community-based services in education, college access, youth development, arts, workforce development, community organizing, wellness and other key services that provide important resources to the neighborhood's youth and families. New Settlement's success has been achieved through close collaboration with a wide range of educational institutions, housing and community development organizations, businesses, youth development and social service agencies - in the neighborhood, Bronx-wide, across New York and nationally. The programs at New Settlement are supported by local, state and federal government agencies, as well as foundations, corporations, organizations  
Description

JOB SUMMARY: The Controller – Real Estate Operations will work with the Chief Financial Officer to manage fiscal operations of the various Settlement Housing Fund properties.

Job Duties include but not limited to:

  • Review monthly SHF property financial statements prepared by third party managing agents.
  • Review annual budgets for SHF properties in conjunction with Asset Management team.
  • Work with third party managing agents to prepare year-end audit packages and post any necessary adjusting entries to ensure year-end property financial statements provided to external auditors are compliant with US GAAP.
  • Gather documentation and respond to inquiries for annual external audits; serve as the contact between management companies and external auditors.
  • Assist with technical research and guidance as complex accounting transactions occur.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly budget to actual reports, ad-hoc reports as needed by investors and lenders.
  • Correspond with investors and lenders regarding audit and tax return requirements.
  • Work with real estate development team and project managers to review monthly loan requisitions during construction.
  • Maintain fiscal documents and historical records.
  • Assist in maintaining the general ledger and accounting software and creating financial reporting protocol.
  • Support in SHF parent organization month-end and year-end close processes and preparation of financial statements in compliance with US GAAP as needed.
  • Participate in annual SHF parent organization budgeting process.
  • Assist Chief Financial Officer with the training and supervision of other members of the Fiscal team.
 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field required.
  • Minimum 5 years progressive accounting experience; Public accounting experience and/or CPA license is preferred.
    • Some real estate accounting experience is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of US GAAP; demonstrated experience in all aspects of accounting mentioned in above job description.
  • Familiarity with accounting software (experience with Financial Edge NXT a plus).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strict attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work closely with members of the Fiscal team, other SHF staff, and outside parties (i.e., property management companies, auditors, investors, lenders).
  • Perform other duties as reasonably requested.
