The Spiral Garden is an integrated art/garden/play program for children and youth with physical disabilities and developmental delays.

Participants will interact and play through music, visual art, movement, drama, gardening and other arts activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 support for assigned client (communication, personal care, eating support, focus, behaviour, activity tasks etc.)
  • Facilitate assigned client’s fullest possible participation in the program
  • Assist Care Coordinator with other clients’ needs as necessary
  • Assist safe participation of clients
  • Support lunch/break times of client/s
  • Contribute to daily debriefing meetings
  • Collaborate with program staff, volunteers and families
  • Work as a team member with the larger Team, including site prep and clean up, participation in group activities such as arts activities, music etc.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
  • Encourage and support participants in oral communication, working with others, problem solving, decision-making, task planning and organizing, and peer socialization.
  • Apply crisis intervention strategies calmly and effectively, respond quickly to situations.
  • Ability to work in a busy, creative environment and physically demanding (lifts and transfers)
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a Diploma in Developmental Service Work, Personal Support Worker certificate/diploma, nursing education, child youth worker/development degree/diploma or equivalent combination of relevant experience and education required.
  • Basic CPR certification – Basic Rescuer (C) certificate an asset
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certificate an asset
  • ASL qualifications an asset
  • Proven experience and training working with children or youth with physical disabilities, developmental delays and those who are neurodivergent
  • Experience with creative arts (music, art, drama) facilitation and participation preferred
  • Demonstrates ability to be flexible, to assess the needs of individuals and to respond quickly to needs
  • Demonstrates initiative and self direction to work independently at times
  • Demonstrates ability to organize time and manage working hours
  • Demonstrates ability to work in collaboration with staff/clients/families
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to perform lifts, transfer or position participants ages 4 to 18 independently, as needed and appropriate
  • Ability and experience in feeding and providing personal care to participants independently, as needed and appropriate
